DRAKE, Eugene T. “Pete”

Eugene T. “Pete” Drake Mar 19, 1928 – Jul 28, 2016 Thoughtful, generous and artistic, Pete was known for his sharp sense of humor and his many acts of kindness. He had an innate sense of design, played the piano flawlessly, and had perfect pitch. He parlayed his artistic talents into a 40-year career in the newspaper business. At the Omaha Sun he was a key player in the newspaper’s Pulitzer-Prize-winning Boys Town expose, became the newspaper’s planning and production manager, and completed his career at the Bellevue Leader. He and his late wife, Betty, were presidents of the Ak-Sar-Ben Curling Club, curled international bonspiels, and swept the ice into their early 70s. He was one of two principles who redeveloped the Windsor Hotel into apartments in the Old Market, among other historic properties. Pete was a lifelong resident of Omaha, attended Central High School, the Kansas City Art Institute and Omaha University. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty B. Drake, and his parents, Eugene T. Drake, Sr. and Margaret P. Drake. Pete is survived by his son, Thomas Drake of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Carolyn Drake of Orleans, Mass.; cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. A GRAVESIDE SERVICE will commence at 1:30pm on Tuesday, August 2nd at Evergreen Memorial Park and will be followed by a reception for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Siena/Francis House or the Alzheimer’s Association-Nebraska Chapter.
