Earl Paul Stone, Jr.
June 9, 1942 – April 10, 2025
Paul Stone passed away Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Paul graduated high school from Omaha South and served honorably in the United States Navy. After completing his service, Paul devoted 30 years to his community as a member of the Omaha Police Department.
Paul’s trademark wit and story-telling prowess were legendary. Never one to let grass grow green under his feet, Paul enjoyed a lifetime of hobbies including golf, deck building, and of course his beloved gun club, enjoying cowboy action shooting in his later years. In his retirement, he took great joy in time with his grandchildren and even took up motorcycle riding. To say he left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him is an understatement. He was a one-of-a-kind gem who loved his family and friends fiercely and lived life passionately.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jeanette; daughter, Becky, and her husband, Bobby Wernli and their children: Ben and Elliot O’Hare, Kyle, Jess, Dylan and Piper Wernli; sister, Julie Distefano. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Stone.
Paul’s legacy lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the stories we’ll tell forever, and the love he gave. Here’s to you, Paul – may we all live a little more like you did.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 11am at the West Center Chapel, with VISITATION beginning at 10am. Family Interment: Omaha National Cemetery with Military Honors and Omaha Police Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Tunnels to Towers or Wounded Warrior Project, causes that honor Paul’s commitment to service.

My condolences to the Stone family.
What a gift to the world! We had the privilege of knowing Paul through cowboy action shooting. He took to my son, Lakeshore Ranger, right away and made that boy feel like he was the most important kid in the world. Great memories shooting with the Crisco Kid! Please accept my deepest sympathy.
So sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. I will miss hearing all of his jokes when I saw him. Rest in peace.
Paul was a super friend and a great person to know and to shoot with ! He provided me with a lot of his secrets for being a better cowboy shooter. He will be missed by all of us cowboys !!!!

Sgt Stone was one of the best! Always supportive of his crew and a great leader who taught the importance of being a caring, honest, and respected officer. I always tried to use the skills he taught me when I was promoted to Sergeant. My condolences to his family.
RIP LIEUTENANT
Paul was a leader, a mentor and a friend. He was always there when you had a question, needed guidance be it with issues involving the department or life. He was one of a very few that helped me along in those early years learning the “job” and doing it right!!
I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of the “. Crisco Kid” our thoughts are with Jeanette and family . Pauly was the 1st cowboy that I met at a Grand Island shoot. I was in a tee shirt and shorts and after the shoot he let me shoot his guns. I was immediately hooked and I even wore all black like he did. After this I always tried to get on his posse. Will miss you cowboy!!
I send my heartfelt condolences to Jeanette, Becky and family. Me
I shall forever hear his laugh.
Our family was sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. We lived across the street from Ida’s house on 12th Street. Paul was a great guy, excellent police office and a fantastic storyteller. He was a thoughtful mentor to me and my siblings, and I eventually had the honor to work for him as he scaled the ranks to Lieutenant. Paul was one-of-a-kind, and I know he will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Rest in peace Lt.
