Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Edward; sister, Mary Lou Grevey; and the mother of his children, Jeanette Birmingham. Ed is survived by his children: Theresa “Terri” Birmingham, Sherri Sommer, Eddie Birmingham, Lary Birmingham, Amy Feldhacker (Neil), and Mike Birmingham (Stephanie);  grandchildren: Tina, Julio, Alexander (Meghan), Sam, Joe, John, Michael, Dylan, Averyl, and Emmet; great-grandchildren: Creighton, Rylan, and Jace; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his companion, Joanne Furze. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses: Patrick Birmingham (Barbara) of Nebraska and Florida, Robert Birmingham (Mary) of Cocoa Beach, Florida, George Birmingham (Tammy) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Carol Strait (Randy) of Sioux City, Iowa.

Ed was the oldest of six siblings born to Edward and Margaret Birmingham in Sioux City, Iowa.  He completed his undergraduate studies at Creighton University, and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Catholic University Law School, and his LLM in taxation from Georgetown Law School. He was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and the Florida State Bar Association

Ed was a respected member of the legal community, having taught at Creighton University School of Law for more than 50 years. Beloved by his students, Ed was honored by the Nebraska Bar Foundation as Legal Educator of the Year in 2020. Ed retired from Creighton in 2021 with the distinction of Professor Emeritus.

Family and friends were the most important thing to Ed, spending summers with his children and grandchildren at his home on Lewis and Clark Lake and winters in Florida with his brothers and sisters and his companion, Joanne.

Ed loved sports!  A loyal Creighton Blue Jays fan, he rooted as well for the Huskers, Notre Dame, and the Kansas City Chiefs.  Ed was also an avid reader, especially of legal fiction and anything western. On any given day you could find Ed on the golf course playing a sport he loved.

Ed’s wisdom, kindness and quiet humor touched many lives.

I am brokenhearted to read this..Ed has been a great friend since I was in law school in the late 70s. My husband and I played bridge with him, traveled with him, and laughed hard and often. The world has lost someone priceless.

Professor Birmingham was a great law school professor. He taught Torts when I was a first year law student at Creighton in 1986-87. I have had a rewarding career in Omaha practicing law as a result of his dedication to students. My condolences to the family.

    My condolences to the family.

Terri, Sherri, Eddie, Larry, Amy and Michael: I am so saddened to hear of the passing of your dad. as you know I worked for him when I first started my employment at Creighton Law School when he was professor and Associate Dean. He was the most kindness, considerate and overall nicest person I have known. I was very fond of him, not only as a boss but as a friend and I will always remember him and how he made me feel so welcomed when inviting me to some family events. I will miss him. My heartfelt condolences to the rest of the family. Love you guys. Hattie

“Easy Ed” was a favorite for sure! I had him for Tax and Bankruptcy at Creighton in the 1980s and he was a friend of my Dad’s through undergrad. Condolences to his family – but I know he’s probably just as happy in Heaven as he appeared here on earth.

When I joined the law school faculty in 1994, Ed was kind enough to welcome me and even to give up one of his courses so that I could teach a subject I knew something about. I have always been grateful for that kindness. His gentle, wise, and solid counsel guided me through the many years that have passed since then. I always counted him among those in my circle of trust. I will miss him greatly. Peace be unto you all from our Heavenly Father as you grieve the loss of a father, grandfather, and a good an honorable man.

I am so sorry for the loss of Prof. Birmingham. One of my fondest memories was traveling to London in 2002 with him and my negotiations partner to compete in the international negotiations competition. He was a wonderful professor.

    My condolences to the family.

So sorry for your loss. I was a student of Professor Birmingham and learned so much from him. I especially appreciated his kindness and willingness to help at any time. Prayers to all of his family members and those close to him.

Ed will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Very much admired by his students to whom he passed on his amazing knowledge of the law. It was great to have seen him a few years back when he and his children attended my brother’s memorial service in Sioux City, and more recently in Cocoa. Although he was not doing well at the time, he was still the Ed we always knew. My condolences to all of the children – good memories. Rest in peace, my friend.

Ed was one of the most wonderful human being I have ever met. I was privileged to have him as a law school prof for every semester in my law school career. He cared about his students and helped us succeed. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. He was truly one of the great ones.

I will always remember Professor Birmingham for his encouraging words, his wisdom, and his unwavering passion for the game (what a bracketologist!). His legacy endures through the countless legal scholars and professionals who had the privilege of learning from him. He will be deeply missed, and my heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
