Edwin Charles Carlson

CARLSON, Edwin Charles, Mar 10, 1922 – Sep 15, 2009, died in San Diego, CA, at the age of 87. Charles was born to Carl and Esther (Erickson) Carlson in Mead, Nebraska. He graduated from Mead High School and received a degree in engineering from the University of Nebraska. After a brief stint working for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego and the Martin bomber plant in Omaha as a Senior Tool Inspector, Charles enlisted in the Air Force and served as a B24 navigator. At the end of World War II he returned to Nebraska and began his career with Northern Natural Gas. Charles worked through the Northern system designing and supervising the construction of pipelines from Oklahoma to Minnesota and Wisconsin and new compressor stations to serve them. He designed bridges to carry pipelines across several rivers, including the Missouri, which are still in use today. Charles retired from Northern as a district manager in 1984. Charles married Frances Nelson in 1947. They raised 5 children. Charles coached Little League baseball, taught Sunday School and confirmation, and served on several church councils. He enjoyed gardening and was particularly fond of volunteer plants. Preceded in death by wife, Frances; parents; and brother, Nels. Survived by sons, John Carlson (Barbara) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Robert Carlson (Elizabeth) of Iowa City, IA; 3 daughters: Wendy Berg (Ronald) of Iowa City, IA, Sally Carlson of Atlantic, IA, and Mary Beth Carlson of San Diego, CA; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lucille Parton; many nieces and nephews; and faithful companion, Sam. Charles was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. FUNERAL SERVICE 11am Saturday, Sep 26, 2009, at Alma Lutheran Church in Mead, NE. VISITATION at church 30 minutes before the service.
