Eugene A. “Gene” Conley

CONLEY, Eugene A. “Gene” Oct 3, 1925 – Aug 23, 2013 Former Omaha resident, Eugene A. Conley died at home in Carmel, CA following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melville and Margaret Conley of Nebraska City, NE, and his wife Erma Grace (Fuller) Conley. He is survived by 4 children: Dr. Tom Conley (Sara) of Austin, TX, Roger Conley (Rebecca) of Chevy Chase, MD, John Conley (Cathy Lang) of Omaha, and Dr. Sue Conley (Dr. Michael Stieghorst) of Middleton, WI; 6 grandchildren; brother, Curtis of Denver, CO; and sister, Claire, in London, England. Gene was a Veteran of the US Navy, where he was a Naval Aviator at the end of World War II. Born in Nebraska City, he attended the University of Nebraska with his wife of 52 years, Erma Grace Fuller. They married in 1948. Gene was an insurance executive, and retired as Chairman and CEO of Guarantee Mutual Life, now part of Lincoln Financial. He joined American Mutual Life and was an agent in Ashland, NE and Lincoln, NE, before going to the home office in Des Moines, IA. In 1972 the family returned to Omaha, where he became President of Guarantee Mutual and a leader in the insurance industry. As a community leader, Gene served as Chairman of United Way; the Omaha Chamber of Commerce; University of Nebraska Foundation; Board of Governors of Nebraska Wesleyan University; and on the Board of Southern Methodist University. He also served on the boards of Clarkson Hospital and Methodist Hospital, and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He was a Councillor, then Governor of the Knights of AkSarBen. He was also on the boards of Goodwill, Henry Doorly Zoo, and the Nebraska Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was appointed a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army and SAC Consultation Committee. MEMORIAL SERVICE Monday, September 16th at 10:30am at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 5410 Corby St., Omaha. Private interment in Omaha. Memorials are suggested to the Omaha Community Foundation or the Monterey Peninsula Community Foundation. “He had a life well lived, and he died in peace.”
