I worked for Gene many years ago on the state desk at the World-Herald. What an incredibly kind man. I loved working with him, and I know he will be missed. My sympathy to the family.

Gene was my first editor at the Omaha World-Herald, indoctrinating me to the hard-nosed, news-hawking style of the reporting that typified the Lincoln Bureau. He was a level-headed editor who knew what would make a good story. And a hard worker — those editors worked late into the night on Fridays especially, editing that day’s copy and all the Sunday stories we produced. What a great guy. Sorry to read of his passing. Peace be with him and his family.
