Eula Maudene Stice

Eula Maudene Stice

Nov 22, 1912 – Jan 3, 2017

On January 3, 2018, in Omaha, NE, Maudene Stice departed this life for the next after an astounding 105 productive years. Her life on earth is notable for not just its length but also accomplishment: In 1936 she left humble beginnings in Kentucky to start a new life in Montana with husband Earl. Together they traveled the state, moving twice a month for the next 12 years, living in every small town between Missoula and Glendive to follow his job installing telephone offices. It was the wild west and they fit right in—but brought along a healthy dose of decency wherever they went. Their adventures made for some hilarious stories. Traveling all over the state gave Earl and Maudene a true understanding of self-reliance and deepened the love they shared for each other. Sometimes they disagreed but they never fought and always treated each other with respect. They also treated their two kids with respect and lots of affection but didn’t let them get away with anything despite the kids’ best efforts.

Maudene was a pillar of the American Baptist Church and she was a cub scout den mother. She hiked the Bob Marshal Wilderness with her daughter and served as docent at the C. M. Russell Art Museum in Great Falls. Through frugal living and careful saving, Maudene funded a substantial college scholarship endowment at Great Falls High School. She regretted not attending college and this was her way of making a difference.

Surpassed only by a love for the Lord and for her family was her love for golf. She carried a shotgun in her golf bag because “you never know when a rattlesnake will come between you and the ball.” Respect for others included respect for snakes but in a different sense.

Maudene was the middle child of eight sisters and two brothers. She entered this world on November 22, 1912, and departed in her sleep the morning of January 3rd, 2018. She was predeceased by husband Earl (also from Kentucky) and all her siblings. She is survived by son, John Stice (Sandra) in Redmond, Washington, and daughter, Dr. Coleen Stice (Robert Wells) in Omaha and their families which include five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Hers was a long, fully engaged and exceptionally well lived life. She loved and was loved while here and will be missed by many. Maudene’s ashes are to be placed to rest next to Earl in the Great Falls Highland Cemetery at a later date. The family plans a Memorial Service on January 10th in Omaha and a short graveside service next spring because the best way to honor anyone’s life is to express love to them while they are still with us—and that’s been done in abundance.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the First Baptist Church, 525 2nd Ave N, Great Falls, Montana 59401; to the Papillion Judson Baptist Church; or to the charity of your choice.

May Our Good Lord accept her into His loving embrace.

Your mom was such a great lady. She has done such a wonderful thing with the scholarship at Great Falls High in their memory. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Your friend Tom
