Evelyn M. Schmidt

Evelyn M. Schmidt

Oct. 30, 1928- Oct. 25, 2023

Evelyn Mary Schmidt passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. She was preceded in death by husband, Leonard; later in life companion, Ralph ‘Bud’ Peitzmeier; brother, Ralph Gross; sister, Alice Keller; daughter-in-law, Casey Schmidt. She is survived by her children: Janet Tomarkin (Robert), Patricia LaRosa, Jeffrey Schmidt, Laura Cloutier (David); 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was born into a loving family with a proud German heritage. She lived her entire life in Omaha, Nebraska where she was a devout member of the Catholic faith, worshiping as a founding member at St. Joan of Arc Church in the Westgate community. She fell in love with and married Leonard Alexander Schmidt, and was able to spend 34 wonderful years with him raising their family.

She proudly worked at the Douglas County offices where she made many amazing friends who nicknamed her as ‘The Straight Arrow’ in reference to her penchant for being mischievous and witty, while claiming feigned innocence on her own behalf. Following her retirement from the County, she enjoyed taking trips around the country visiting her beloved children and grandchildren.

Her grandchildren lovingly referred to her as “Gramzie”. She was known to be a shining example of doing the right thing. She loved making up and telling them fun stories that illustrated the difference between right and wrong. The grandkids would intently listen to find out what would happen next and what was the moral of the story.

She was a huge Nebraska Huskers Football fan. Her passion for supporting the team was contagious. One of her Game Day traditions was to celebrate every touchdown by opening the door of her house and vigorously ringing a large bell that the whole neighborhood could hear. Her friends would always get together and put their dollar bill into the pot and pick numbers in the hopes of winning $10.00. Evelyn had a reputation for being well-dressed and accessorized ‘Dressed to a T’. Her favorite color was purple, and it showed.

Evelyn was a wonderful wife, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother “Gramzie,” and will be missed dearly.

Visitation begins Friday, November 10, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. with a Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Mortuary. Funeral is Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Interment Calvary Cemetery.

On behalf of everyone at O’Meara Wagner, where Laura works, we extend our condolences and sympathies to your family. I enjoyed reading about Evelyn’s life and the positive mark she made on and left with so many, especially no doubt her grandkids and great grandkids. She clearly loved and embraced life and the joy she brought to this life will be magnified in the next.

Peace be to all of you in this time of sorrow over her passing.

My mother, Marie Yeshnowski was a lifelong friend of Ev. I believe they met when employed by the same company in the late ‘40’s. My Mother was in Ev & Leonard’s wedding and worked at the Westroads branch of the Douglas County Clerk’s office. My condolences to her family.
