John F. Fitzgibbons, M.D. July 8, 1927-July 16, 2016 John F. Fitzgibbons, M.D. of Panora, IA, formerly of Omaha-Council Bluffs, passed away July 16, 2016 at his home in Panora. John was born on July 8, 1927 in Council Bluffs to the late John P. and Anna Marie (Rollheiser) Fitzgibbons. He graduated from St. Francis High School in Council Bluffs in 1945 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his discharge from the Navy, John earned his B.S. Degree in 1950, M.S. Degree in 1951 and his Medical Degree in 1955, all from Creighton University. John married Rosemary P. Brady in 1953. They were blessed with nine children. John was the associate pathologist at CHI Bergan Mercy Hospital from 1967- 1974; pathologist and program director at Bergan Mercy from 1974-1992 and was associate professor of pathology at Creighton University School of Medicine from 1967-1992. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church; Fellow College of American pathologists; Fellow American Society of Clinical Pathologists; member of the American Medical Association, Nebraska Medical Association, Metropolitan Omaha Medical Society (president in 1984), Omaha Midwest Clinical Society (president in 1976); Alpha Sigma Nu (1953), Phi Chi Medical Fraternity; Alpha Omega Alpha (1989); American Legion Post #2, Council Bluffs; Knights of Columbus, General Drumm Assembly, 4th Degree in Council Bluffs. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary P. Fitzgibbons in 2013; son-in-law, Raymond Joseph Hood, CDR, USN, Retired. John is survived by his children: Rosemary (Doug) Kolbo of Dallas, TX, Rev. John P. Fitzgibbons, S.J. of Denver, CO, Maureen (Victor Pizarro, III) Fitzgibbons of Petaluma, CA, Kathleen (Keith) Saunders of Minneapolis, MN, Patricia (John) Blakeney of Overland, Park, KS, Margaret (Keith, T.S.) Ward of Sea Brook Island, SC, Anne Marie Hood of Chesapeake, VA, Thomas F. (Tori) Fitzgibbons of Des Moines, IA, James M. (Jasmine) Fitzgibbons of Chicago, IL; seventeen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Rita Mae and Maureen Brady, both of Omaha. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 20th, from 5pm to 7pm, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm, all at the Bel Air Chapel, 12100 W. Center Rd. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Thursday, July 21st at 10am at Christ the King Catholic Church. Entombment, Calvary Mausoleum with military rites by American Legion Post #2. A lunch will follow at Christ the King. Memorials are suggested to Creighton Preparatory High School or Christ the King Catholic Church.
