Floyd Gaylord Pitt was born on June 4, 1931, in Harrison County, Iowa, to parents Helen (Craft) and Floyd George Pitt. After graduating Logan High School in 1949, Gaylord served the US Army in the Korean War where he earned three Bronze stars. After leaving the military, Gaylord returned to the family farm working with his father Floyd. In 1956, Gaylord married Marlene Martin, a kindergarten teacher for the Logan School District. To this union were born David William, 1957, Floyd Michael, 1959, and Patrick James, 1962. In 1972 Gaylord began working for JL “Pete” Peterson at Missouri Valley Farm Equipment initially setting up new equipment and then moving into sales. In the 1970s, Gaylord instructed tractor safety for Iowa State Extension. In 1983, Gaylord married Nancy Neilsen and began working as a Harrison County Magistrate, a career lasting 22 years until 2005. During this time, Gaylord also drove for Crusader Coach lines traveling along with his close friend Dale Pettit to various destinations including Branson, Eastern Iowa, and Minneapolis. Gaylord also served as a mental health advocate. In 2008, Gaylord was elected to his first term of Harrison County Supervisor followed by his second elected term in 2012. Gaylord had an excellent work ethic which he passed on to his three sons growing up on the farm tending crops and feeding cattle. “Work time” and “Fun time” as he would say. “They are separate!” Gaylord loved dancing, music, cribbage, and spending time with family and friends. He also loved the fellowship of fishing with trips to Canada, the Dakotas, and anyplace to catch fish of all types. One of Gaylord’s great joys in life was driving the “Hardscratch” school bus route for Logan-Magnolia Schools. Gaylord was a member of the United Methodist Church where he taught Methodist Youth Fellowship while providing sleigh riding parties and Halloween parties in abandoned “spooky” houses.
