Fred William Hildebrand

May 31, 1949 – October 12, 2024

“When the road looks rough ahead, remember the ‘Man upstairs’ and the word HOPE. Hang onto both and tough it out.”  – John Wayne

Fred William Hildebrand made his final journey home to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on October 12, 2024, surrounded by family. Fred was born in Douglas, Wyoming in 1949 where he graduated High School. He went on to attend Black Hills State University where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Education. It was during his junior year at BHSU when he met the love of his life, Nancy. Fred and Nancy were married in Lead, SD on June 13, 1971 and spent 49 wonderful years together, creating a life filled with memories, laughter, and unwavering support for one another. Their love and commitment was inspiring to all who knew them.

Fred was a devoted family man and his passion for the outdoors defined his spirit. He treasured every moment spent hunting and fishing finding peace in nature. Whether it was shooting at the gun range, or going to the races he embraced life with enthusiasm. His heart swelled with pride attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, activities and celebrating their achievements with steadfast encouragement.  Rarely missing a single event, whether he was coaching or there as the biggest fan, these moments were the highlights of his days. His affinity for cigars was a cherished ritual; he frequently spent his evenings indulging in the rich flavors, reflecting on life’s blessings. All of these moments became opportunities for him to share stories and laughter with all who loved him, creating lasting memories.

While living in Arkansas, Fred looked forward to his “Pho Pham Sunday” which quickly became tradition each week after church. It was also during this time that he became an avid Arkansas Razorbacks fan and his passion for the Hogs ran deep.  He attended as many football and baseball games as possible and his excitement was unmatched. Life then took him to Nebraska. He loved living in Omaha where he had the opportunity to watch the Hogs play multiple times in the College World Series. He often lost his voice from yelling “Woo Pig Sooie” throughout the entire game reflecting his zest for life. These moments weren’t just about the games, it was spending the day making memories  and teaching everyone how to “call the Hogs”.

Fred always found happiness playing cards with loved ones. In recent years he enjoyed hosting his Tues/Thurs pinochle group, sharing fun and laughter with dear friends, including his cherished companion Jean.  He spent his life surrounded by a beloved community and could often be found sitting in the foyer visiting for hours. These gatherings were a testament to the deep connections he is leaving behind, a legacy of love and camaraderie. He always made room for his sweet treats, because no day was truly complete without it. Whether it was homemade syrup, caramels at Christmas, cereal or a bowl of ice cream with a side of rice crispy treat for dinner, he loved to share these traditions with all his family and friends creating “sweet” memories we will never forget.

From words of a dear friend… Fred and Nancy were those rare people who stepped into your lives and had such a huge impact that you knew you would never be the same again.  They were the sweet fragrance of Jesus Christ and everyone loved being in their presence.  They affected so many people with their unconditional love and generosity. They made God proud.

Fred is lovingly remembered by his daughters: Elisa Johnston (Eric), Glennis Stevens (Tobias), Kara Hicks (Joshua); daughter through adoption Cheryl Metevier (Michael); his daughters in God’s eyes: Elizabeth Kennon, Rose Mary Pham (Billy), and Julie Lilly (Jason); grandchildren: Scott, Beth, William, Azaria, Ceibhionn, Niamh, Trygg, Kallista, Katracy, Kalina, Jestine Bugner (Kyle), Karissa, Kennedy, Kamryn, Karsen, Tyler, Carys, Easton, and Evelyn; great-grandchildren: Kooper, Kole, Koen, Kodi, and Nina; sister Ann Rex (Hildebrand); and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, Karen Hildebrand; mother, Elizabeth Ethel Hildebrand (Zaichkin); father, Lyle Edward Hildebrand; and brother-in-law, Lawrence “Bud” Rex.

Please join us for a CELEBRATION OF LIFE at 1:00 PM (MST) on Saturday, November 2nd at the Tretheway Pavilion (115 S. Prayers for the family and friends of Fred and Nancy ( I recently found out about her passing also.) I met Nancy and Fred while working at Mary’s Little Lambs Preschool for many years where Nancy not only became a friend but someone I looked upon for advice and someone that showed me God’s love along with Fred. They showed Jesus to everyone they met and both gave the best hugs and when they told you they loved you , you felt it within you and you knew that would never change regardless of the situation. I have many memories with them and wonderful conversations. Nancy taught me how to make picnic pinwheels and Fred’s Carmels I will never forget. God bless you always and sending love and hugs ❤️
