Frederick M. McGarry
November 25, 1935 – July 15, 2023
Fred McGarry, a long-time resident of Omaha, passed away on July 15, 2023. Fred was born in Spokane Washington on November 25, 1935, to Frederick and Catherine (Steele) McGarry. He graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory High School in 1954, and attended Washington State University. While serving in the United States Army he spent one year in Korea. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey in Spokane and for a fishing compound in Alaska. After moving to Nebraska he worked as a Construction Inspector.
Fred married Yvonne Schlautman, on October 8, 1983. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. Fred was an avid rock & mineral collector and had an extensive collection. He was an inventor beginning at the age of 10 and throughout his life, always looking for ways to improve a process. He invented several tools to assist his wife with her crafting and quilling projects. He had a huge interest in history, including World War II.
Fred is survived by his two sisters, Mary Skovajsa and Virginia (Edward) Willyard; nieces & nephews and in-laws: Gene & Marilyn Spence, Dallan Schlautman, Duane & Mary Schlautman, Paul & Linda Evans, Pat Thalken and Dee Schlautman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne; parents; brother, George McGarry; a niece & nephew.
All Services at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 5419 N. 114th St., on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. VISITATION: 9:30am, followed by ROSARY at 10:15am and MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL at 10:30am. INTERMENT: Wednesday, 2:30pm at Omaha National Cemetery with Military Rites. Memorials are suggested to St. Thomas More Society, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, and College of Saint Mary.
