Garland Edward Frost Jr. was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 9, 1952, to Margaret and Garland Frost. He had one sister, Judy, who was six years older and adored her little brother. Garland Jr. had beautiful blonde curls, which led to his nickname, “Sonny,” a name he was known by to nearly everyone he met.
As a child, Sonny was a paperboy and attended Benson High School, which he could see from his front yard. He later worked at Louis Market, where he advanced to the position of Produce Manager. He even secured a part-time job for his father, sorting soda bottles at the same market.
Later on, Sonny took a position at Festival Foods and briefly moved to Idaho to work for Albertson’s. He had two nieces, Kris and Karen, with whom he enjoyed spending time during their childhood. He would take them to Gallagher Park in Benson to “swim” in the fountain and toss pennies.
Sonny had a passion for the outdoors, particularly fishing. He competed in many bass fishing competitions over the years and took his great-nephew Tyler fishing several times to pass on his knowledge of the sport. In addition to fishing, Sonny also hunted and trapped.
In the early 1980s, Sonny moved to Russell, Kansas, where he lived until the late 1990s. He returned home to help his father after his mother’s passing, caring for the house and yard. He cultivated a large garden, growing everything from seed, and he often canned and froze his harvest, sharing the fruits of his labor with family.
After his father’s death, Sonny worked for many years at Home Depot on Military Road, where he enjoyed interacting with customers and coworkers. Even after retiring, he would visit the store just to catch up with his old friends.
Post-retirement, Sonny continued his love for gardening, planting both vegetables and numerous flowers. He inherited his passion for flowers from his mother and took special care of the roses she had planted years earlier.
In his later years, Sonny spent much time with family during birthday parties, holidays, and Husker football games. He often accompanied Judy, Jerry, Kris, Karen, or Ken on shopping trips or errands. Even when he didn’t need anything, he loved just talking and spending time with family.
Sonny is survived by Kris, Ken, Tyler Grzywa, and Karen Blasig.
