Gary Lee Anderson was born on February 3, 1946, the son of Lake and Helen (Peterson) Anderson. One of four children, Gary grew up in Harlan, IA. He attended St. Michael’s grade school and, later, Harlan Public High School. Gary was a proud Eagle Scout who, during his formative high school years, worked part-time as a grocery sacker at Helgerson’s Grocery Store. Following high school graduation, Gary moved to Omaha, NE and attended Creighton University. He held numerous part-time jobs and graduated from Creighton in 1969 with a degree in history. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, graduating in 1975 with a master’s degree in public administration. He began his career in Lincoln, NE as a director of the Data Systems Division for the Nebraska Department of Public Institutions. After several years, he returned to Omaha and married Jeanne Kwapiszeski and began working at Mutual of Omaha as a Systems Analyst. He followed that up as a Project Manager/Technical Advisor for Research & Systems Development at Enron. He continued his career as a national defense contractor working for Vanguard Research and BAE Systems, among many others. Gary was blessed with two sons, Dr. Gary Anderson Jr., a professor at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, and John Anderson, who is employed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
