Gene Arthur Rono passed away peacefully on July 21, 2023, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Many of us fondly knew him as “Skip.” Skip was born on January 14, 1942, to Alfred and Jennie Rono in Omaha, Nebraska, where he resided for his entire life. He grew up in Benson and graduated from Benson High School. He went on to work for Union Pacific Railroad until November 1, 1987. He married the love of his life, Angeline Mary Rono, on October 27, 1962. They were married for 42 years. They were blessed with three beautiful children: Deborah M. Hotz, Christine D. Wasson, and Tony G. Rono.
Skip loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He adored spending time with family and friends whenever he had the chance. Skip was always willing to lend a helping hand and he never met a stranger. He was always up for the next adventure.
He enjoyed spending his free time working on projects and in his yard. He also cherished volunteering and spending time at the Holy Family Shrine, where he made countless valued friendships. He also spent many game days cheering on his beloved Huskers.
Preceded in death by wife, Angeline M. Rono; parents, Alfred and Jennie Rono; granddaughter, Alicia Hotz. Skip is survived by his daughters, Deborah Hotz (Herman Adjini), Christine Wasson (Deano); son, Tony Rono (Michelle); grandchildren: Ben Wasson (girlfriend, Jen) and Bryce Wasson (Ally), Maggie D’Agosta (Kevin), Alexis Merrill (Derek), Tyler Rono (fiance, Morgan), Carly and Grace Simon; many great- grandchildren, and one on the way.
Skip’s family will host a Celebration of Life on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 11 am at the West Center Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Holy Family Shrine.

Sorry I could not attend. Condolences to the family. Gene and I have known each other from grade school and scouts and through Benson High School. His death stirred up many memories from our childhoods.
