Genevieve Therese Brecka Molacek

Genevieve Therese Brecka Molacek

February 11, 1927 – September 16, 2019

Genevieve Therese Brecka was born on February 11, 1927 to John and Genevieve Brecka in Avon, South Dakota. Her parents farmed in Wagner, South Dakota. She spent her childhood growing up on the farm and spending many a day working alongside her father out in the fields.  As an only child she always found ways to create new adventures on the farm, many that she spoke of throughout her life. She walked to grade school, where she learned in a one-room schoolhouse among the other students in various grades.

After grade school she moved to Omaha, where she attended Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls high school. She was a part of the 20th graduating class in May 1945. After graduating, she began an on-again, off-again career as a Typist and Proofreader with Mutual of Omaha that would last a span of almost 20 years.

Her life changed forever in 1946 when she met World War II veteran Maurice Molacek in Schuyler, Nebraska. While visiting some friends in the small Nebraska town, she and Maurice set eyes on each other for the first time outside the town’s theater. They were engaged that same year and exchanged their vows on October 11, 1947. They were married at St. Adalbert Catholic Church and had their reception at the iconic Blackstone Hotel in Omaha; they honeymooned in the windy city of Chicago.

The first few years of their marriage were spent dancing the night away at the Peony Park Ballroom and outside pavilion, entertaining friends and family, and settling down in their first house on Myrtle Avenue in Omaha. In 1951 they were blessed with a daughter, Elizabeth, and in 1954 a son, John. In their new home on Frances Street the following years were spent raising a beautiful family and creating wonderful traditions and spectacular memories, many of which are captured on old home movies. In her spare time, Genevieve shined as a seamstress, buying McCall patterns at Brandeis and sewing dresses for Betty and suits for herself. Johnny wasn’t left out; he would get a toy from the store on their trips to buy material. She continued her creativity in her later years knitting blankets for her great grandkids, affectionately known as “Nee-Nees.”

Ames Bowl was their place on Sunday nights where she and Maurice competed in a couple’s league…bowling, beer, friends and fun. Their relationship was filled with wonderful moments. Babička (her Mom) lived with the family until her passing in 1975.  For several years, every week, Genevieve and her friends would go to each other’s homes to catch up and play card games such as Hand and Foot. Bingo was on her list of favorite things to do. Genevieve was also involved with her parish of Holy Cross and was devout in her faith as a Catholic under Father Salanitro.

Genevieve’s grandchildren were her pride and joy. Carl, Chris, Vic, Rachel and Michael loved spending time with her, listening to her life’s adventures and memories of a life well spent. She also loved welcoming her ever-growing family, adding great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Genevieve loved life. Through her 80s she was swimming several times a week, playing bingo with her friends, and even a small road trip here and there.

She created a close bond with many of her neighbors, notably the Guinn’s and their two sons, Ryan and John, who became lifelong friends of her Grandson Mike.

When Maurice retired, the beginning of their golden years was spent travelling the United States from the beautiful coasts of California to the mountainous terrain of the Pacific Northwest.

Her life would again be changed forever when Maurice was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1986. She was blessed to have four more years with him before his death on November 12, 1990. Nearly 30 years later, on Monday, September 16, 2019, Genevieve joined him and all her loved ones before her.  Her love and devotion to family, friends and God were an inspiration.
