George Allen Wanek was born in Aurora, Nebraska to George Clayton and Martha Jane (Kimball) Wanek. He passed away on October 27, 2024, in Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 86.

George grew up in Aurora, Ne, graduating from Aurora High School in 1956, then from Creighton University with a degree in Mathematics in 1960. He proudly served in the United States Air Force as an Officer and Captain from 1960-1967. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Aurora, Nebraska to farm with his brother Tom. In 1968, George began working for IBM and retiring after 25 years. Retirement did not suit George, so a few weeks later, he went to work with ConAgra for another ten years.

George married his best friend, Margarita (Varela) Riebersehl on July 16. 1999, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Omaha. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus serving the parish in many capacities and headed Nocturnal Adoration. From his earliest years, he was always close to the Lord, and his devotion to his faith was exemplary. Many were touched by his remarkable kindness. He was a man of great curiosity who was eager to learn more about everything he could. George was careful with his thoughts and words, generous with his time, and very particular about his yard.

He was a devoted husband to his wife, and his family was tremendously blessed by his love and attention.

George was a first class gentleman in all respects. George and I kept in touch from time to time regarding Aurora and Hamilton County community related matters. He took pride in Hamilton County and always had a genuine concern for its long term growth and success. I will miss his thoughtful and caring conversations.

I got to know George while I was working in the IT department at NPPD in Columbus and he was working for IBM. He was not only a very technically competent person, he was also a fine gentleman and a pleasure to work with. My condolences to his friends and family.
