George L. Dennis, DVM

DENNIS, George L., DVM Aug 29, 1944 – Oct 20, 2014 Passed away Monday, October 20, 2014, at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, NE, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born August 29, 1944 in Cedar Rapids, IA to Charles Edward and Josephine Frances Rozek Dennis. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, IA, where he was a track star and an honor student. After high school, he attended Iowa State University and was a member of Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree while he continued to have success on the ISU Track Team. During his last year of veterinary school, he married Bonnie Swenson from Clermont, IA. After veterinary school, he was drafted by the United States Army. During his time in the Army, he served as the Veterinarian in the White House for President Nixon’s dogs. After his Army service, he moved to Omaha, NE, and he purchased the Animal Medical Center where he worked as a small animal veterinarian. In 1988, he was selected as the Veterinarian of the Year by the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association. He coached all four daughters in softball. Once retired, he traveled, golfed and spent hundreds of hours tending to the landscaping in his yard. He was preceded in death by parents, Charles Edwin and Josephine Dennis. Survived by loving wife, Bonnie and four daughters: Andrea (Peter) Bashara of Elkhorn, Jessica (Craig) Iwanski of Stockton, KS, Tanya (Matthew) Blakeley of Ashland, OR and Diana (Jason) Likes of Elkhorn; nine grandchildren: Alexander and Victoria Bashara, Caleigh, Camden and Cason Iwanski, Sophia and Anna Blakeley and Emory and Finnegan Likes. Survived also by siblingsL Michael (Dawn) Dennis, Greg (Susan) Dennis and Mardelle (Richard) Doud, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 23rd from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel. CELEBRATION OF LIFE Friday, October 24th at 11am at Stonebridge Christian Church, 15801 Butler Ave. Military rites at church by Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334. Memorials are suggested to the George and Bonnie Dennis Family Scholarship at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
