George L. Johnston

George Johnston, June 26, 1936, passed away peacefully with his family by his side March 7, 2025.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Everton and Eliska Johnston; sister, Elma Brooks; wife, Mardee Korinek-Johnston.
George is survived by his daughter, Michelle Hellmann; son, Sean Johnston; Mardee’s boys: Kurt (Suzy) Korinek, Kreg (Kristen) Korinek, Kris (Lisa) Korinek; nephews, Ben Thompson, and Dan Thompson; 9 grandchildren: Brooke (Adam), Jack (Emma), Georgie, Bailey, Sam, Mac, Kody, Josie, and Zander; 4 great-grandchildren: Luna, Hudson, Everet and Zen. George was blessed to also have a continued relationship with his stepchildren from his first marriage and is survived by: Terry Kaplan, Jodi Kaplan, and Cindy Kaplan-Hrupek.
George was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1936, landing in Omaha, NE in early childhood. George was a Marine Corps reservist for 12 years. He joined his Dad at the Johnston Insurance Agency which thrived for over 50 years. Their business would take them all over the world, including living in Turkey and traveling through the Middle East, making new friends along the way. Throughout his life he was an active community member, serving on the board at the Omaha Home for Boys, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Ski Patrol, a Tangier Shriner and a member of their band (saxophonist). He recently celebrated 50 years as a Freemason at the John J. Mercer Masonic Lodge.
He was an avid golfer and an active member of Happy Hollow Country Club for over 50 years, where he spent much of his time on the golf course. He loved boating, fishing, hunting, skiing and enjoyed passing these passions along to his friends and family. He spent 35 wonderful years with his wife, Mardee; their love story is quite beautiful. “It’s Me” would be their book title. They enjoyed spending most of their free time and retired lives in Lake of the Ozarks, traveling, visiting every lighthouse they could, cruising, and enjoying each other’s company. They were big fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Kansas City Chiefs, and passionate about Omaha Lancer Hockey and the UNO Mavericks Hockey team. Countless games were attended.
George moved back to Wisconsin in 2024, where he spent the rest of his time here on earth with his daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His life came full circle.
George was full of unconditional love, kindness, and forgiveness that was expressed in his daily life. He was an amazing human being that lived his life for God. His light will be missed every day.
FUNERAL SERVICE: Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 9:30AM with VISITATION beginning at 9:00AM at the West Center Chapel, 7805 West Center Road, Omaha.
INTERMENT: Forest Lawn Cemetery with MILITARY HONORS.

A beautiful life reflected in his obituary! George sounds like he led wonderful and full life serving others, loving and being loved, and enjoying so many activities as well as nature. May his love and memories sustain you in the days ahead!,
George… you will be missed! You were such a sweet guy. I always enjoyed the times I saw you over the years and appreciated our talks and the time spent with you! I admired your caring, understanding and dedicated heart. You were a gift to so many!
