On March 29th, 1954, a beautiful soul was born. Josephine and John “Jack” Fitzgibbons had a baby girl and named her Geradette Marie – after Saint Gerard, the patron saint of pregnant women. They called her Geri for short. A little more than a year later, her father was involved in a car accident, which took his life. Shortly after, her baby brother Louis (named many years later) was stillborn. Due to these life changing circumstances, Josephine and Geri moved in with her grandparents, Carmello and Alfia Morello. They lived there for most of Geri’s young life, where she learned what it meant to be an Italian. Every Sunday, they attended Church, followed by a big spaghetti dinner with a little bit of wine. She learned enough Italian to be able to speak it with her mother, grandparents, and aunts. She also learned a few choice words that she later shared with her daughters.

A little later in life, Josephine and Geri moved into a small house less than a block from her aunts Mary and Nellie. Mary (Frank) had 3 children and Nellie (Bill) had 4 children. Her aunts, uncles and cousins were her family. In fact, they spent most of their weekends, summers and winters together at a cabin at Lake Waconda built by her uncles and grandfather. As teenagers will be teenagers, they would often whine to their parents about having to go to the cabin on the weekends and spend time with family instead of with friends. The adults would often respond by saying that they would shove the lake or nearby cornfield up “where the sun don’t shine.”

Geri attended Blessed Sacrament through 8th grade and High School at both Notre Dame and Holy Name. Upon graduation, she attended Clarkson College where she studied to become a nurse. Geri was a nurse for 38 years, taking care of patients before, during and after surgery. Patients and colleagues could always count on her for comfort, kindness, laughter and smiles. She was a mentor, colleague, and a true, lifelong friend.

One night, while at the bar she and her nurse friends frequented, she was approached by a man. He introduced himself by bringing his hand to his chest, saying, “Nurse, nurse, I’m having a heart attack.” Her response? Not appropriate for these purposes. The result? Love. Geri and Dan were married on May 1st, 1982, and would spend 43 beautiful years together. Dan says that they’re marriage was perfect… most of the time.

On July 9th, 1983, they welcomed their first daughter, Nicolette “Nikki” Marie. On November 18th, 1984, they welcomed their second daughter, Andrea “Anni” Lynn.  Nikki and Anni could always count on their mother. Whether it was school, sports, choir, heartbreak or hard life lessons, Geri was always there. She made lasting impacts on the lives of her grandchildren as well. Eleanor, Shay, Jethro and Hudson loved spending time with their Nani, and she cared for them deeply.

Geri was kind, bold, passionate, thoughtful. She gave a small piece of her heart to everyone she knew until her heart was too tired to go on. As a friend said, “The mold was broken when Geri was born”. Truer words have never been spoken.

You were the rock of our family. We will see you in the stars.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I loved Geri! She put a smile on my face everytime I saw her. She was fun-loving, easygoing and flat out honest. She was a true gem to be around.
Thinking of you all during this difficult time. May she rest peacefully knowing she made a great impact on many.

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person who touched so many lives. Geri was part about what I love about Omaha.

A “sister” to me and my sisters, Geri was. She was our cousin but because she had no siblings she became our sister ….along with our other cousin, Teri.. Geri was always there for me even though I’ve lived in Kc since I was 18. She always made time to see me when she came to Kc to visit her friends. If we couldn’t get together she always called. She was always there for me when I had medical questions. I am extremely saddened that a part of our family is gone. She will always be in my heart …….she will be missed.

I’m so very sorry to hear of Geri’s passing! What a shock!! She was unlike anyone I’ve ever known. She always said exactly what popped in her mind, and didn’t apologize for it. She was kind, loving, at times shocking, hilarious, a great listener, and an even better advise giver. I’m so happy to have known her, and so very sad to see her go so soon. My heartfelt condolences go out to you, Dan, Nikki, Anni, and family.

I got to know Geri through my sister in law. She was always smiling, upbeat, helpful, and interested in what I was doing. Although I didn’t know her well she made a huge impression on me. She will be greatly missed! Prayers for her family.

    Geri,
You were not only a cousin to me, but you were also my friend. You taught me how to drive a stick shift. You could be loud, brazen, and crass at times, but above of all you were a loving and caring individual. You would do anything for anyone.
You were an amazing nurse to so many people. You often called Dan to check on him. He told me he particularly thought about you the day before you left us. I am happy we saw you in AZ. You were just as feisty as ever. There is so much more I could write about, but it’d be too long. This is not something I ever envisioned myself writing today. You will forever be in my heart. I will always think of you laughing and having fun poking people in the sides. lol. Fly high my cousin, my friend, my family. Thank you for everything. We love and will miss you.

I worked with Geri at Clarkson west and loved her humor. Our lives seemed to intertwine in respect to Notre Dame and nursing we both chose.. She was our oxygen woman at Clarkson west always making sure we had enough. She will forever be be in my hesrt

How about one more story? It wouldn’t surprise me that someone will write a book that eventually will be made into a movie. Hmmm…What would it be rated? 😳

Anyway, about 15 years ago or so, there was a “Franco”
Reunion held in Wahoo, NE thanks in great part to Joe and Debbie Spicka. It was a joyous occasion with so many relatives and enough Italian food and beverages to feed the whole city of Lentini, Sicily !!!

Geri and I were having a spirited conversation as the evening was drawing to a close – – and after we had downed a few shots of Fireball – – when we decided to see who could stand on their head the longest. ( I am about 2 years younger than her and had the advantage of a bald head ) I don’t know how long it took, but this “former athlete” , as my wife likes to call me,
ended up on the floor first. Geri, I look forward to a rematch when we meet again. I will miss you.

We are missing her so much! Sending prayers to her family and many, many friends. All of our Love to you, Geri. Gunner and Mike
