Gerald J. Kube

Gerald J. Kube

June 10, 1932-August 14, 2024

On August 14, 2024, we lost our steadfast dad, grandpa, great -grandpa, brother and friend. He was 92 years old.

Jerry was born on June 10, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was the third child and second son born to Erwin and Ellen Kube. He attended St. Peter’s grade school and graduated from Creighton Prep High School in 1950. During his junior year, he volunteered to be an escort for a homecoming queen candidate from St. John’s High School, an all-girls Catholic high school. He was fortuitously matched with a beautiful young lady who would later become his wife, Virginia Dugan. Jerry and Virginia were married on August 9, 1952.

Jerry is survived by his children: Nancy Kube, Maureen Kube and Jim (Connie) Kube. He was a proud and loving grandpa to: Lindsey (Joe) Kass, Annie (Joe) Vitale, PJ (Sarah) Sorensen, Jackson (Kaycee) Kube and Elise (Cash) Campbell.

He was always excited to spend whatever time he could with his great-grandchildren: Gavin and Rachel Kass, Enzo, Rafa, Dino and Lucy Vitale, and Liam and Noah Sorensen. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Liston; along with many loving nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Kathy Sprague.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife Virginia; parents, Erwin and Ellen Kube; infant brother, Erwin Francis; niece, Lori (Jeff) Sutton; nephews: Michael, David and Tim Liston.

After Jerry and Virginia married, Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Navy and the family moved to California. Jerry served from 1954-1956 aboard the U.S.S. Rochester. Upon his discharge, they moved back to Omaha, NE, where they bought a home and raised their family.

Jerry worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and U.S. West for 33 years before retiring. He and Virginia then moved to Vail, Colorado, to manage a condominium complex at the base of Golden Peak. They both loved the mountains but missed family, and after 9 years, they moved back to Omaha to begin their retirement.

Jerry had many hobbies and enjoyed them all. He not only loved to hunt and fish, but to plan, make lists, pack and travel on those adventures. He even loaded his own ammunition.

He absolutely loved country music and enjoyed making cassette tapes of his favorites, which he played endlessly. He was an avid photographer, a hobby which began in Colorado and continued for years. He also enjoyed golfing and golfed whenever he could. Both he and Mom volunteered at Lakeside Hospital for over six years. They also traveled to Ireland and Germany.

Jerry had uncommon common sense. He was direct and sometimes stubborn but was impossible to ignore. He cared about people and was a good friend. He always recalled your name and made you feel special. That is the way he wanted you to feel.

He loved to play Cribbage and loved to laugh. When he said he would do something, he did it. He could lecture you, sure enough, but only because he cared about you. He was the foundation of our family.  He taught us all what it means to be a loving spouse as he spent hours every day with Mom when she suffered terribly from Lewy Body Dementia and had to be placed in a memory unit. He planned every day with her because, as he explained, “it’s the right thing to do, we need to be together.”

Love and commitment were not just words to him. He longed to be with her at the end of his days when his body was broken.  Now, he is where he needs to be. We will miss him terribly. We will always love you and will never forget you.

Jerry was a good friend and neighbor. When he moved next door, he told me I could bring Max over to see him every day. We missed days here and there, life interferes with good intentions. I will always remember him sitting in one of the chairs by the entry. On the hottest days of summer, Jerry would be sunning himself. I inquired how he could stand all that heat. His response was that he loved it. I will miss him. My heart goes out to you all. Nancy Ludwick

I was honored to be Jerry and Virginia’s physician a number of years ago before retiring. I remember him as fine man and supportive of his wife, Virginia. I also remember Virginia then as especially dignified. I have no doubt he will be missed.

Jerry alway brought a smile to my face and a warm feeling when he was in the room. We were blessed to be on this journey with him. May he be reunited with God and those souls who walked this plane and shared lessons, love and togetherness with.
