Gerald “Rex” White
Dec. 27, 1955 – March 1, 2025
Rex was one of six children. As a boy growing up in Omaha he enjoyed playing in and exploring a wooded area at Papio Creek. We remember him saying he wanted to make exploring his life. During the summer he competed in swimming events and played baseball.
Rex graduated in 1974 from Westside High School. He played defensive end on their Metro Champ football team and wrestled on the varsity team. Rex went to UNO college for two years and then decided to enter the family childcare business. Rex did well in childcare. He opened, operated, and owned three childcare centers.
During his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers at their Platte River cabin. He also enjoyed volunteering at Schramm Park teaching fishing to children. Rex’s sisters remember him teaching them how to cook the fresh fish he caught and tips on how to remove the fishy smell out of the kitchen. Rex enjoyed going to the Sandhills with all the early settlement history and big open skies. Another favorite of Rex’s was vacationing and fishing at South Padre Island, Texas.
Because of his child-like spirit, Rex was an exceptional uncle to all his nieces and nephews. People remember Rex as an approachable fun-loving guy and a good friend.
He was preceded in death by his his parents, Gene and Donna; sister, Sherri Smith.
He is survived by his siblings: Bill (Ellen), Jody (Fred) Galata, Mike (Ann), Steve (Barb); brother-in-law, Darrell Smith; nieces and nephews: Katie, Mark, Susie, John, Jenny, Matt, Amy, Chrissy, Shelly, Lisa, Michelle and Luke.
Visitation begins Friday March 7, 2025, at 11:30am with a Memorial Service at 12:30 at the mortuary.
Memorials will be directed by the family.

I knew Rex from the very beginning. His mom was one of my mom’s bridesmaids and my brother was named after his dad. I have so many great childhood memories of playing at his house or swimming at mine. He was family and he’ll be greatly missed. My love to his family. Rest in peace, dear friend.
