Geraldine M. “Jeri” Childers

Geraldine M. “Jeri” Childers

July 21, 1937-December 7, 2024

Geraldine M. “Jeri” Childers was born July 21, 1937, in Elgin, NE to Gerald and Julia Zegers.  She passed away on December 7, 2024.

Jeri loved to share that she had 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren whose energy she could nearly match. Never one to sit still, she always had projects and interests throughout her 87 years. She loved to golf, play Pinochle and Bridge, throw parties, sew, renovate homes, and was a professional wallpaper hanger with her friend Jane. It is, therefore, no wonder that she was good at puzzles too. Jeri claims she became ambidextrous as a young farm girl because when one hand got tired, she had to switch to the other! She enjoyed going to plays and musicals and her favorite was “The Sound of Music”.  While her children attended St. Cecilia’s and Cathedral schools, Jeri was an active member in the parish and along with her late husband, Wayne, helped to get Bingo and the Cathedral Octoberfest started. We will miss her sparkle, her advice, and her boundless energy.

Jeri is survived by her children: Karen Klausner, Val (Jeff) Lennard, Paul (Patt), Nancy (Dean) Dobmeier and John (Pam); eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; siblings, Gayle (Judy) Zegers and Judy (Late Jack) Ortmeyer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; sons, Kurt (Sharon) and David; grandson, Jeremiah.

VIGIL SERVICE: Thursday, December 12, 7:00PM at West Center Chapel, 7805 West Center Road, Omaha with VISITATION from 5:00-7:00PM.

From my days as a fellow Cathedral student with Nancy – I do remember Mrs. Childers’ high energy level and that she seemed to always happily be on-the-go! In that regard, Nancy, the apple did not fall far from the tree. Carry on!
May those fond memories warm your spirits now,

My sincerest condolences to Nancy and rest of the family. Reading the beautiful words shared about your mom really describes an amazing, fun-spirited and loving woman who rarely sat idle. (I see where you get some of your traits Nancy). Please know that I’m keeping you in my heart and prayers.

    God Bless,

Hello, Dear Family of Jeri –

It appears my first message didn’t go through in December. I’m not sure anyone will see this; if so, perhaps it can be shared with all?

Our mom‘s had many memories together – my heart was especially warmed knowing they had their weekly rosary group to connect with. Karen and Sharon, I remember being in Cathedral Grade School together. And Val, we met years later at a Bible study.

I have fond memories delivering your folks a singing telegram at a party they hosted in their home off of Pacific Street. Your mom always seemed so strong; certainly blessed with many talents. Ha, and opinions.

I continue to pray the Lord‘s peace and comfort for the entire family, as you both grieve and celebrate your mom. The circle of life is indeed real. You most likely have experienced the layered effect catching you unaware at times.

With much love and deep condolences,
    Joani (Labenz) Eledge
