Gloria Rees Dunbar

DUNBAR, Gloria Rees Jun 5, 1927 – Feb 23, 2014 Longtime Omaha musician. Preceded in death by husband, Bill L. Dunbar, Sr. Survived by son, Bill L. Dunbar, Jr. (Sheri); daughter, Cindy Dunbar Rhys (Joel Revzen); grandchildren, Christian A. Dunbar, CDR USN (Kelly) and Heather D. Hesse (Kipper); 7 great-grandchildren. Gloria Dunbar was a bright light in the life of all who knew her. Born in Omaha, she was known as a leading soprano soloist; appearing with Symphony, Opera and also television, where she had her own program. She contributed greatly to Omaha’s cultural fabric; as radio fashion commentator, Opera Guild President and co-chair of the first Designers’ Showhouse, and being ‘Miss Manners’ for Cotillion and the Durham Museum, among other activities. She was recognized by many organizations, including Opera Omaha creating a ‘Gloria Dunbar Award’, being one of North High School’s first ‘Vikings of Distinction’, and being given the Germaine Monteil ‘Beautiful Activist’ award. She was passionately involved in organizations including Trinity Cathedral, Colonial Dames, the Welsh Society, many musical clubs, and a dedicated teacher to her voice students. She was a gracious, beautiful lady with an indomitable spirit who brought cheer to all who knew her, and whose devotion to her family knew no bounds. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 25th from 5pm to 7pm at the West Center Chapel. SERVICES Wednesday, February 26th at 11am at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 113 N. 18th St. Private Interment, Forest Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral or Opera Omaha.
