Harlan Lansing Lewis

Harlan Lansing Lewis, age 104, of Modale, Iowa passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Harlan was born October 1, 1910 to Bert and Gertrude (Moss) Lewis in Loveland, Iowa. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1927 and attended Graceland College. Harlan married Clara Herman on May 19, 1935. After 72 years of marriage, Clara passed away on February, 7, 2008. The couple owned and operated Lewis Grocery in Modale for 25 years. Harlan was an ingenious builder and fixer of all things. He also loved gardening, carving, and playing the harmonica. After retiring from the grocery business, Harlan and Clara enjoyed many years of traveling by motor home with sister and brother in law, Marguerite and Roger Lucy. Harlan is preceded in death by parents; wife Clara; son Richard; sons in law, Bill Jenkins and Bill Swift; four sisters and one brother. Survivors include daughters, Janet Jenkins of Magnolia, Iowa and Linda Swift of Downers Grove, Illinois; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Prayer service will be held Monday at 6:00 p.m., with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Methodist Church in Missouri Valley after the committal service on Tuesday.
