Harold E. Bernstein, age 96, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2017. Preceded in death by parents, Grace and Louis Bernstein; sisters: Rae Brodkey, Pauline Friedman Mayer, and Shirley Kulakofsky.  Survived by his wife of 70 years, Millie Bernstein; daughter, Kay Goldstein (Bruce); son, John Bernstein (Nancy); grandchildren; great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Mort Zuber and Bob Zuber (Beverly).

Harold, a resident of Omaha, was a successful and respected businessman in Council Bluffs for 50 years.  He was a partner in the Peoples Department Store and later founded Peoples True Value, a large hardware and home center store in Council Bluffs.  Upon the sale of his business in 1996, Harold enjoyed over 20 years of active retirement.  During his 50 years in business, he was recognized and honored many times for his leadership and involvement in the Council Bluffs business community.  He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed golf well into his 90s, and was a 50-year Nebraska football season ticket holder.  He was a man of high integrity, numerous friends, and was loved by many.

Private interment followed by MEMORIAL SERVICE on Tuesday, May 16th at 11:30am at Temple Israel, 13111 Sterling Ridge Drive, Omaha.  Shiva will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, May 16th at Temple Israel.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Phil Sokolof Fitness Center at the Omaha Jewish Community Center; Temple Israel; or the charity of your choice.

    Sending our deepest sympathy to Harold’s family. Harold was a wonderful person and one of a kind. The Monday Bagel Bin group will miss him.
