Herbert B. Underwood

UNDERWOOD, Herbert B. Mar 31, 1927 – Jan 31, 2013 Born in Ringsted, Iowa to Philip Herbert Underwood and Dorothy “Dimple Dot” (Gaylord) Underwood. Herb joined the US Navy at age 17 and served in the South Pacific on the USS Drew. He married his wife of 60 years, Charlotte Julianne Riedel upon returning home after the war. He was hired by NuWay Drug in Sioux City, Iowa in 1953; transferred to Omaha and leased their first company store, operating under the name “Gibson’s.” As the company grew, it was later renamed PAMIDA. Herb became a Senior Vice President and served in many capacities including sales, operations and real estate and retired after 37 years of service. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Cross, an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy, a strong supporter of Husker Athletics Association; Member of the American Legion, The Society of 40 & 8 and a former member of the Omaha Optimist Club. Preceded in death by wife, Charlotte Julianne Underwood; daughter Jacqueline Sue Underwood; sister, Dorothy Helen Underwood; brothers, William Warren Underwood and Max Gordon Underwood. Survived by 3 children: Janet Burnham (Keith), Jim Underwood (Karen), and Jerry Underwood; 5 grandchildren; Jerry Underwood Jr. (Carri), Matthew Burnham, Kristopher Burnham (Ember), Jodi Underwood, and Kimberly Burnham; 5 great-grandchildren: Jack, Mary, and Kate Underwood, Parker and Pierce Burnham; brothers, Charles Edward Underwood and Raymond Roger Underwood (Joan); many nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 3, 3-5pm at the West Center Chapel. SERVICES Monday, February 4 at 10am at Presbyterian Church of the Cross, 1517 S. 114 St. Interment, Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military rites by Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed by family.
