HOLT, Donald Ray

Donald Ray Holt Sep 23, 1945 – Aug 5, 2016 Don Holt, loving husband, amazing father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many, died on August 5th after a four-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Don found the joy in life even as he faced the reality of ALS. Don graduated from Hastings High School in 1963 and attended Hastings College. At the death of his father in 1968, he took over the management of his father’s business, Hastings Diesel Service. His brother, Jim, joined the business after college in 1977. Together they grew the two-employee business to more than 130 employees before selling in 1999. Don was on the boards of Nebraska Trucking Association and Council of Fleet Specialists. He was National President of Council of Fleet Specialists, 1995-1996. He was Campaign Chairman of Hastings United Way and a member of the Hastings Board of Education. He also served on the Board of Foundation One Bank in Omaha. In 1971 Don married Patricia Gilbert. He loved being with family and friends. He enjoyed snow skiing, golf, gardening, his koi pond, and was an enthusiastic traveler. He will be missed. He was preceded in death by his father, Andy Holt; stepfather, Vearl Jensen; sister-in-law, Laurie Holt; brother-in-law, Robert Shreck. He is survived by his wife, Pat; three children: Andrew (Katie), Allison Speer (Brian), and Matthew (Kate), all of Omaha; five grandchildren: Andi and Charlie Holt, Anaka and Hudson Speer, and Garrett Holt; mother, Nina Holt Jensen of Omaha; sister, Susan Shreck of San Diego, CA; brother, James Holt of Omaha; stepsister, Carolyn Fairbanks (Dave); stepbrothers: Larry Jensen (Anita), Clark Jensen, Rod Jensen (Lynne), and Bob Jensen (Cate); brothers-in-law, Mike Gilbert (Janet) and Jim Gilbert (Sharon); numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 10th, from 5pm to 7pm at the Bel Air Chapel, 12100 W. Center Rd. SERVICES Thursday, August 11th at 11am at Countryside Community Church, 8787 Pacific Street. Private Interment, Parkview Cemetery in Hastings, Neb. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hastings YMCA, The ALS Association Mid-America Chapter, or Countryside Church Relocation Campaign.
