Allen James “Al” Ihnen Aug 11, 1950 – Mar 31, 2015 Al was born on August 11, 1950 to Vernon J. Ihnen and Carmen Ann (Swanson) Ihnen. The eldest of six children, Al spent his childhood days on a small farm (with no running water) near Palmer, Iowa. In 1961 the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Al attended Westside High School. After graduating in 1968, he joined the U. S. Navy and served on the USS Saratoga, which at that time was one of the Navys largest aircraft carriers. Shortly thereafter, he was employed as a customer service representative at what was then the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In that position he also served as Chief Union Steward for the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 7400. Later he held several marketing and management positons at AT & T and Lucent Technologies before being selected as VP of Human Resources for New Vision Communications and Xeta Communications. Al was active in his community and in his church. Besides serving as a past president of VFW Post 2503, Al was a member of the Knights of Columbus (where he earned the distinguished rank of Grand Knight), Knights of Columbus Mens Choir, and St. Roberts RCIA Program. Al was particularly passionate about his family, fishing, Go Big Red Football, and John Wayne movies. His wife Sandy was his soulmate and the love of his life. The two of them enjoyed many vacations at their cabin on Lake Ottertail, Minnesota, often accompanied by nieces, nephews, and other family members. Al loved visiting Sandys family in Fullerton, Nebraska, and enjoyed many weekends farming, hunting, polka dancing, and playing pitch. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon J. Ihnen and Carmen A. (Swanson) Ihnen; brother, Warren K. Ihnen; sister, Audrey Kaufman of Omaha. Al is survived by his wife, Sandy; brother, Gary Ihnen (Carol) of Cumming, IA; sisters: Cynthia Gage (Roy) of Blair, NE and Arlis Dowding (Greg) of Omaha; brothers-in-law: Gary Voichahoske (Molly) of Dakota Dunes, SD, Chuck Voichahoske (Heidi) of Fullerton, NE, and Bob Voichahoske (Tammy) of Fullerton; many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Als physicians and the staff at Bergen Mercy Hospital during his illness, the Alegent Creighton-Health At Home Hospice, and Josie Harper Hospice House for their compassionate care. The family will receive friends Monday, April 6th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7:30pm at the church. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL Tuesday, April 7th at 10am, St. Robert Bellarmine Church. Interment, Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors by Benson VFW Post 2503. Memorials are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project, Nebraska Humane Society, or Knights of Columbus Council #10108.
