_______________________________________________________________________

With deep sadness, we announce the death of Jack Rose, age 77. After a long struggle with Pulmonary Fibrosis and outliving his original prognosis, he departed this world on July 25, 2024, in the company of his loving wife of 56 years.

Jack was born on July 29, 1946 on a farm in Tonganoxie, KS, to Russell and Alma Rose. He was the youngest of four children, with whom he remained close throughout his life. Jack was loyal and loving and valued family deeply.

Jack was a driven and intelligent man who valued education. He graduated from Kansas State University with a major in Agricultural Engineering, and later pursued two master’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Public Administration from University of Nebraska at Omaha. It was at K-State that he met the love of his life, Janet Nicodemus (Rose).

Upon graduation, Jack served in the US Army and worked at the Army Corps of Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant then 1st Lieutenant while he was there. After leaving the military, he continued working as an agricultural and civil engineer at the Corps of Engineers in Omaha, NE, where he remained for 34 years until his retirement.

Never one to sit idly, after retirement, Jack dedicated himself to helping communities devastated by natural disasters through his work in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). His knowledge and experience, combined with his compassion and desire to help others, made him a valuable asset during disaster recoveries in Guam, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and more.  Later, Jack pursued new education and certification to become a residential appraiser. He managed his own small appraisal business, trained and mentored students, and advocated for homeowners.

Most important to Jack throughout his life, though, was family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Janet Rose, to whom he was married almost 56 years, and he found his greatest joy in their shared life. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Jack and Janet enjoyed traveling together and hosting gatherings with family and friends, creating cherished memories for all who knew them. They built a wide circle of friends through their experiences together in church, work, and travel. Jack’s goofy sense of humor and Janet’s dry wit kept him chuckling regularly.

Jack was a loving father to his children Jeff and Jill, and a proud grandfather to Madeline, Allison, Carly, Connor, Julien, and Sylvia. When his grandchildren were young, you could find Papa Jack teaching them to ride bikes or hit a ball outside, or on the floor playing games with them. As they got older, Jack valued quality time and conversations with his children and grandchildren, learning their ideas or guiding them about life decisions. He delighted in his son-in-law Bruno Roger and daughter-in-law LeAnna Rose, thrilled his children had found spouses to love, as he had. Through the years, he also valued the constant and steady support of his brother-in-law Roy Nicodemus. Jack’s legacy of love and devotion will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory and a community that is richer for having known him.

Patty and I have so many fond memories of wine shared, roads travelled, and world cities visited, with the two of you. I also remember many golf games with Jack. He didn’t always drive them straight but when his game was on he outshot the rest of us by a country mile. I will miss those times. Jack, you can swing away on firlds of green

Patty and I have so many memories of our travels together, wines sampled and re-sampled, cities and countries visited with the two of you. They were wonderful times and warm memories. Jack was a most amiable travel companion and up for almost anything. I will miss his friendship greatly.
