January 16, 1950 – April 13, 2025
Jack L. Armitage, age 75, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on April 13, 2025, at home, surrounded by family, following his battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Thelma (Young) Armitage.
Jack was born on January 16, 1950, in Kearney, Nebraska, to Bernard and Thelma Armitage. He and his brother shared a loving and adventurous childhood, though they often tested their mother’s patience. Jack developed his love for the mountains through annual family vacations to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.
Jack first met Nancy in Sunday school the summer after sixth grade. They began dating their sophomore year while attending Kearney High School. In addition to spending time with Nancy, Jack was a standout athlete. He played as an offensive lineman on the football team, earning a walk-on offer at the University of Nebraska, he was also a talented shot putter, placing in three state track meets.
After graduating high school in 1968, Jack and Nancy attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. They were married after their second year of college, on August 22, 1970, at the United Methodist Church in Aurora, Nebraska. Jack earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and received his CPA in 1972.
After graduation, the couple moved to Omaha, where Jack worked in corporate accounting. Jeff was born in 1977, and Jack realized his professional calling was to teach. The family moved to Laramie, Wyoming, where Jack earned his master’s degree in accounting in 1979. Julie was born in 1980, and the family remained in Laramie until 1983, during which time Jack taught at the university, before returning to Omaha.
Jack began teaching at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) in 1983 and earned his PhD from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1987. He taught at UNO for 37 years before retiring in 2020, leaving a lasting impact on countless students. Over the course of his career, he served as a Fulbright Specialist, taught classes at numerous international universities, including those in Eastern Europe and Egypt, and sat on the AICPA board that developed CPA exam questions. He received the UNO Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award and the Outstanding Graduate Accounting Professor Award. His academic contributions included more than 40 publications and 30 professional presentations.
Jack was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was always present, patient, and had a goofy sense of humor. Family was deeply important to him, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He encouraged his loved ones to dream big, follow their passions, and explore the world.
He enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe, St. Martin, and Estes Park, Colorado, and was a passionate fan of Husker athletics, Manchester City soccer, and Formula 1 racing. He also loved an eclectic mix of musical genres, photography, and starting each day with a cup of coffee while catching up on the news.
Jack was a lifelong Christian and an active member of Urban Abbey. At his core, he was a kind and giving person, accepting of all people, curious, and thoughtful. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
