James Arthur Mullin

James Arthur Mullin

September 26, 1936- February 17, 2025

James Arthur Mullin, known as “Art” to many in his family and beloved Holy Name community, passed away on February 17, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 88.

Born in Omaha on September 26, 1936, James was a man of intellect, discipline, and wit. He graduated from Holy Name High School in 1954 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from Creighton University in 1958. His academic pursuits reflected his deep curiosity about the world — a passion that remained with him throughout his life.

James answered the call to serve his country by attending Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He went on to serve four years of active duty as a Naval Lieutenant aboard the USS Duncan, the USS Wilhoite, and the USS Wiltsie destroyers, where he held roles such as Damage Control Officer and Engineering Officer. His military service instilled a sense of discipline and organization that he carried into all aspects of his life — including his habit of drafting daily to-do lists on yellow legal pads for his kids.

After his military service, James built a distinguished career in executive management within the food industry. He contributed his expertise to several major companies, including Campbell Soup, Blue Star Foods, ConAgra, and Golden Bison. His leadership and sharp business acumen earned him the respect of colleagues.

Beyond his professional achievements, James was deeply engaged with his community and had many fond memories of the time he spent living in Creston, IA, as well as Tecumseh, NE, and Ralston, NE, where he built lasting friendships. He served on various boards and was an avid bridge player, pursuits that reflected his keen strategic mind. A lifelong learner with a passion for history and archaeology, he found joy in reading, lively discussions, and the company of family and good friends.

James is survived by his children: Teresa (Ron Semerena), Ann, Elizabeth (Tim Abariotes), Robert (Claudia), and Joseph; grandchildren: Tara Baber, Sara Barnes (Seth Luby), Steven (Brianna) Albut, Christina and Sebastian Garcia, James Declan Mullin; great-grandchildren: McKenna, June, and River Baber; and his brother Jerry Mullin. He is also remembered fondly by special friends Eeva and Esa Elomaa and many dear family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his spouses, Mary Lou Mullin and Julia Mullin; his grandson Jacob James Barnes; his son-in-law Doug Siren and his sister-in-law Bridget Mullin.

James will be remembered for being a devout husband and wonderful father, his love of sports and trivia, intelligence, honesty, wisdom, caring nature — and for playing a mean game of bridge. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, in family members who carry forward his values, and in friendships that will forever cherish his memory.

May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Jim was to be revered, he was a great Father, friend and a great person for society in general. Jim did a lot of charity work for his beloved Holy Name, in which kids will benefit partly in his name. I knew Jim through his sons Rob and Joseph, which are still my best friends today. Rob and Joe are men of high character and loyalty and believe a lot of those qualities came from Jim in their upbringing. So Thank You Jim for settling in Ralston and raising good kids so that I could benefit. Rest in peace my friend, you’ve earned it.

I was so saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. Though I didn’t know him deeply, I always found (& heard of) him to be principled, devoted & engaged with life. He was gracious whenever I visited… I’ll fondly Jim’s patience while being Judy’s & my “chauffeur” on a full day of sightseeing & a lovely steak lunch at Brother’s Sebastian. And, I’ll miss those fun/silly impromptu “Name That Tune” gatherings at Dick & Bev’s. He truly added to those joyful moments. My sincerest condolences to you all.
