Life story of James Hughes

James J. Hughes Jr., age 90, was born on August 26, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska to James Sr. and Dorothy Hughes. He had three siblings, Pat, Patsy, and John. He graduated from Creighton Prep High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.

He was stationed in France during that time and worked as an Office Clerk. After returning home to Omaha, he worked at SCIOTO as a “sign salesman” and then as an independent rep. for Hutchinson Display until his retirement.

Jim was an accomplished photographer, with an eye for capturing incredible wildlife photos at the Henry Doorly Zoo, Lake Manawa, and many other sites across Nebraska. He also took photos for special events around the Archdiocese of Omaha, especially at St. Cecilia Cathedral flower shows and other events at Cathedral.

He photographed events for IPF gatherings on the Creighton Campus and their annual celebrations. Jim took numerous photos for Creighton Prep High School events, sports banquets, and activities. He was recognized as an honored alumni in the 2022 Prep Alumni magazine.

Jim was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church at Creighton in Omaha. He filled many roles such as usher, money counter, altar server, sacristan, and any other tasks that were needed.

He also was a member of American Legion Post #1 and charter member of the LaSalle Club. Jim was a member and contributor to the Fontanelle Forest and the Henry Doorly Zoo Camera Clubs. His wildlife and nature pictures are things of beauty.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr., and Dorothy; his brothers, Patrick, and John Hughes; and his sister, Patricia A. Daeges (Edwin Sr.).

He is survived by his four nephews; cousin, Denny Connor; and beloved friends, Mildred Brau, Tom Klammer, Rich Ryan, Terry Wilwerding, Ann Weiberg, and many others.

Special thanks to Maria Johnson and the St. Joseph Villa Hospice team for their compassionate care of Jim.

Jim was a good friend to Ed, Dick, and Jerry Spethman. Dick was my dad and Jim was kind of enough to send me pictures from Prep events that he attended in his later years. Rest in Peace.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences! Sorry, I could not make it to the Mass because of a flat tire! However, I am live streaming it now.
Mary and I are thankful to have the pictures he took of our wedding on September 17, 1977!
    Yours Truely
    Frank
