James L. Smith

September 18, 1949 – January 24, 2025

Passed away at the Lighthouse in Omaha, Ne.

Jim was a lifelong resident of Omaha and the son of Lee and Jane (Egermayer) Smith.

He attended Christ the King Catholic School, Loveland Elementary, and graduated from Westside High School in 1968. He and his family spent many days at the “Blind Duck” along the Platte River. After graduation, he worked at the family business, Dutch Mill Distributing. Sometime later, he moved on to Mutual Protective Life Insurance Company. Jim was often recognized as a valued employee at MPIC. He retired early, after more than 20 years with the company, to care for his mother, Jane. Jim was a great fan of University of Nebraska and Creighton sports programs. A long-time supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Jim cherished his time outdoors.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Jane; sister, Kathy; niece, Tiffany Head.

Jim was a “Good Man,” loved and admired by his many friends and family.

Special “Thanks” to the staff at Lakeside Assisted Living, The Lighthouse and Tabitha Hospice who provided many hours of exceptional care.

A Catholic Mass will be held Wednesday, January 29th, 11am at the Lighthouse Chapel (17600 Arbor Street) with Fr. Andrew Sohm officiating.

Interment: Evergreen Cemetery with Fr. Andrew Sohm and Pastor Frank Kerkemeyer officiating.

A Reception will follow at the Happy Hollow Club in Omaha.

Memorials may be directed to Make-A-Wish or the Nebraska Humane Society.

    I graduated from Westside with Jim. He was a quiet guy, but always polite and kind. He was very devoted to his family. We will miss him.
