James Lee “Jimmy” Bone

BONE, James Lee “Jimmy” Feb 16, 1925 – May 28, 2013 Age 88yrs, of Omaha, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. Jimmy was born February 16, 1925 in Kansas City, MO. He lived in the Springfield, MO, area as a youth and attended Cleveland High School in St. Louis, MO. He served in the U.S. Navy from September 1, 1942, to December 5, 1945. He was stationed on the Battleship Nevada as Captain of a gun crew responsible for the maintenance and execution of five-inch guns and saw action on all fronts and in five major battles: Attu, located in the Aleutian Islands; D Day; Cherbourg (France); Iwo Jima; and Okinawa. He received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Boatswain Mate 2nd Class along with the following decorations: American, Pacific, European, African and Middle Eastern Campaigns and Victory World War II. Jimmy married Florence Eileen (Schindler) Brady in Sioux City, IA, on September 13, 1946. They had sons, James Lawrence Bone and William Lee Bone, and stepson, Albert Lee Brady. After the war, Jimmy was a newspaper printer and later a printing salesman until he retired in 1990. He and Florence lived in Beaumont, TX; St. Louis, MO; Denver, CO; San Diego, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Lincoln and Omaha, NE. They enjoyed traveling and took several nice vacations including trips to Hawaii, Mexico, Canada and cruises in the Caribbean, to Alaska and England. Jimmy was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He attended Nebraska football games and opening day play at the College World Series for years. They had many friends and relatives as guests at their home over the years and were always great hosts. Jimmy and Florence attended Battleship Nevada reunions in Colorado Springs, CO; Las Vegas, Nevada; Seattle, Washington and Norfolk, Virginia and kept in touch with several of his shipmates over the years. At one time their reunion was among the largest military groups to meet yearly. Jimmy is in four action photos in a book about the history of the Battleship Nevada. On August 31, 2009, Jimmy took the Honor Flight with other WWII veterans to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. While traveling on the airplane, he recalled that he had traveled to report for duty in the Navy on that same day of the year in 1942. Jimmy was a Master Mason and proud of being a 50- and then 60-year member. He enjoyed coming to the Schindler farm and being in the Monowi and Lynch area where Florence lived as a youth and went to grade school and high school. They liked seeing her school mates and friends at the many Lynch HS alumni banquets they attended over the years. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James Marvin Bone and Doris (Owens) Bone; a sister, Mary Margaret (Bone) Savetz; and his wife, Florence E. Bone. Jimmy is survived by sons: James L. Bone, William L. Bone and wife Lu, Albert L. Brady and wife Rosalie, all of Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren: Beth Mohr, Andrea (Ryan) Gibb, Kelli (Chris) Kooyman, Randy Peatrowsky, Shelly (Mike) Ballard, Eric and Jesse Bone, Alan (Heather) and Timothy (Kimberly) Brady and Ann (Bob) Klemm; 18 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Peyton, Halie, and Colin Peatrowsky, Brett, Jake, Kobe, Mya and Madeline Ballard, Mason and Riley Kooyman, Jack, Roger, Maria, Madison, McKenzie and Morgan Brady, and Julie Klemm; sisters-in-law, Alberta L. Sieler of Monowi, NE, and Raegene Bjornsen of Henderson, NV; nieces, Belinda D. Jons and husband Leon of Lincoln, NE, and Vickie S. Taylor of Omaha, NE; other relatives and a host of friends. VISITATION was held from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, May 31, 2013, at the West Center Chapel of Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler Mortuaries. FUNERAL SERVICES were held at 2pm on Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the West Center Chapel, with Pastor Mike Ballard officiating. Pallbearers were Randy Peatrowsky, Alan Brady, Eric Bone, Jesse Bone, Ryan Gibb, and Chris Kooyman. A GRAVESIDE SERVICE was held at 2pm on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Alford Cemetery near Monowi, NE with Rev. Blair Kirkpatrick officiating. Military Rites were provided by American Legion Post #228, Lynch, NE. Following the graveside service the Methodist church ladies provided a nice meal for family and friends at the Lynch Community Hall in Lynch, NE. Memorials are suggested to Nebraska Lung Association.
