James M. Decker, known to friends as “Jimmy D,” passed away on January 9, 2018, at the age of 61 years.

A native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Jim attended Iowa State University, graduating with a degree in finance. He was in the insurance field for many years before taking a step back to help with his children’s numerous extracurricular activities.  Jim served for numerous organizations, including booster clubs for both his children’s athletics, coaching recreation teams, and other activities.

Jim enjoyed playing golf with his son and friends, fishing (including once catching the World Record for Small Mouth Bass), coaching Cortney’s softball team in the USSSA National Championship, playing games and cards with his grandchildren, and watching the Cowboys. You could always tell when he was in the room.

Our family is sad to hear of Jimmy’s passing. We reminisce about him now and then. He was our sister Debbie’s teenage boyfriend back in Fort Dodge. He was a good friend. -The Christophers

Kim, Cortney and Nick: My heart aches for you during this difficult time. May happy memories invade your thoughts in the coming days and weeks. Please know that I walked away from every interaction with Jim with my cheeks aching from smiling/laughing so much. I will miss him.

Courtney and Nicholas, My deepest sympathy on the loss of your dad. He was a kind and neat person! Jim and I were classmates at Fort Dodge Senior High graduating together. We also attended the same church. Jim always had a smile on his face and a cheerful greeting. Unfortunately I lost track of him after graduation and some of the re-unions. God Speed my friend…

My brother and I were childhood friends with Jim, in a group made up of neighbor kids Hottmans, Marsh, & Bemrich. We spent many a bright summer day playing together, and when the weather was not cooperating, playing cards or board games indoors at one of our houses. If we were lucky, Mrs. Decker would offer us some of her delicious baked goods. We never fought among ourselves, and we rarely if ever got into trouble. Those were our formative years, we helped each other become the people we are today. I send my condolences for the sad and untimely loss of your Dad.

Jimmy D, I love and miss you so so much!!! I think of you everyday. I go get McChickens like we use to. Twin Bings, play at Ralston Keno and use your lucky numbers. You are my are my best friend forever! I will never know another person that is as kind, helpful, and that has such an awesome character and heart as you. You were always there for me no matter what. I still plant our garden every spring. I’m sorry it took me so long to do this but I just don’t want to believe that you are no longer here. I know you are having fun up there and I feel your presence all the time. You will always be in my heart and soul. Love you Jim,
    Your Bestie- Jennifer

I’m sorry to say we are 3 years too late. We tried to look up our old college friend, Jim. He was happy, fun & positive. We found an old photo of Mark & Jim watching a football game together. Jim has Cortney in his lap and is feeding her a bottle. Mark has Harmony in his lap and is feeding her a bottle. Jim has a big smile on his face. Those were the days! He always made us laugh. Wish we had kept in touch. You have our deepest sympathy.
