MONEN, Sr., James P. “Jim,” May 6, 1933 – Aug 18, 2011. The Honorable James Philip Monen Sr., 78, passed away August 18, 2011 at his home in Omaha, NE. Survived by his wife, Maureen O’Donnell Keenan Monen; son, James Philip Monen Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law: Michaela Maureen and Brian Goerke, Kate and Tim Pieper, Sheila and Steve Virgil, and Emily Rose Monen. Jim is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Gerald Ries of Omaha. Preceded in death by parents, Daniel J. and Agnes Monen; daughter, Agnes Clare; brother, Daniel J. Monen, Jr.; sister, Patricia Dearduff. Born May 6, 1933 in Omaha, Jim graduated from Creighton Prep High School in 1951, attended Georgetown University and received his law degree from Creighton University in 1957. Jim worked in the Douglas County Prosecutor’s Office, private practice, and on the bench of the Workers Compensation Court before retiring in 1992. Active in Democratic Party politics, Jim was appointed in 1993 by Governor Ben Nelson to fill a vacancy as the representative for District 4 in the Nebraska Legislature until 1994. His retirement years were active with traveling, golfing, painting and frequent socializing with his family and friends. Jim, with his wife Maureen, was a generous supporter of many area social service and educational institutions, including Creighton University, Creighton Preparatory School, Sacred Heart CUES, the St. Augustine Indian Mission and Catholic Charities. The family will receive friends Sunday, 5pm to 7pm, with VIGIL SERVICE at 7pm at the West Center Chapel. MEMORIAL MASS Monday, 10:30am, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: Creighton University; Creighton Prep; Catholic Charities; the St. Augustine Indian Mission; or Sacred Heart Christian Urban Education Service (CUES).
