James Stuart Chapman

CHAPMAN, James Stuart Dec 1, 1935 – Nov 14, 2014 Age 78; died peacefully at home in Omaha on Friday, Nov 14, 2014. He was preceded in death by parents, William Stuart Chapman and Goldie Mae Miller Chapman, and nephew, Daniel K. Bentz. Survivors include niece and caregiver, Penny Dupuy; sisters, Lois Bentz and Carol Vinjamuri, all of Omaha; one nephew and 6 nieces, 9 grandnephews and 11 grandnieces, 7 great-grandnephews and 9 great-grandnieces, one great-great-grandnephew (Omaha, New York and England); other relatives and good friends. Jim graduated from Tech High School in 1954, excelling in Mathematics and Science. After graduation he joined the Navy and completed all training with distinction at the Naval Air Technical Training School in Norman, OK, Aviation Electronics School in Memphis, TN and a multi-engine training school for Navy pilots in Hutchinson, KS. He then went to the California Naval Air Station in Alameda where he was assigned to a Navy Patrol Squadron. He participated in deployments to Alaska and Japan and received top secret clearance during his 6 years in the Navy. After an honorable discharge he attended the University of Hawaii and was a staff member at the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics. He then attended University of Nebraska, where he was a member of several honor societies and on the UNO track team. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After graduation he was accepted into the C.I.A. but turned it down to pursue the more lucrative private sector. Jim received special recognition throughout his career. He was also an accomplished author with a publication in the Library of Congress. Jim retired as lead engineer from a position within “Stennis Space Station” (1 of 10 NASA field centers in the United States) in Bay St. Louis, MS, where he tested space shuttle main rocket engines. GRAVESIDE SERVICE to be held on Monday, December 1, 2014 (Jim’s birthday) at 2pm at Fort Calhoun Cemetery, with military rites by Benson VFW Post 2503. Memorials may be directed to the family in care of the mortuary.
