DAVIS, J. Bernice Apr 25, 1935 – Feb 28, 2013 With deep sadness we announce the death of Janet Bernice Davis, known to friends as Bernie. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 28, 2013, in Omaha. Bernice was born on April 25, 1935, in Webster, South Dakota, to Bert and Signe Kidman. With her brothers Bruce and Russell and sister Carol Susan she grew up in South and North Dakota and considered Wessington Springs, South Dakota her hometown. She graduated from Wessington Springs high school in 1953 and earned a bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State College in Brookings in 1957. In 1959 she bicycled across Europe. In 1961 she married Tom Davis, with whom she had two children, Scott and Shanna. The family settled in Norfolk in 1969. Bernice taught kindergarten and first grade at Bel Air and Woodland Park elementary schools for many years. Her classroom was always full of interesting things to look at and do. While working, Bernice earned a master’s degree in education from Wayne State College. Bernice loved her cats and enjoyed watching wild birds and animals. She knitted, crocheted, and sewed expertly. She enjoyed collecting antiques and decorating. She read avidly and wrote poems. She played piano and sang. She often visited her daughter Shanna and family in Omaha and took great pride in her grandsons Nick and Andrew. She visited her son Scott in San Diego and witnessed rocket launches with him at Cape Canaveral. Bernice belonged to PEO for 50 years and participated in Methodist church services and groups. Bernice was preceded in death by parents Bert and Signe and brother Russell. She is survived by husband Tom Davis; son Scott Davis of San Diego, California; daughter Shanna Fisichella; son-in-law Fil Fisichella; and grandsons, Nick and Andrew Fisichella of Omaha; brother Bruce Kidman of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and sister Carol Susan Hegg of Plano, Texas. A celebratory memorial service with music will be held on Saturday, March 9, at 1pm at First United Methodist Church, 406 W. Phillip Avenue, in Norfolk, NE.
