Janet K. Thrasher
December 23, 1946 – March 22, 2025
Janet Kay Thrasher, beloved wife, mother, Nama, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by the family she loved so deeply. A woman of quiet strength, brilliant mind, and infinite heart, Janet lived her life with grace, humility, and a fierce devotion to those around her. She was the steady center of her family, the warm light in every room, and the kind of soul whose love left a mark on everyone she met.
Janet was born on December 23, 1946, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, to Bernard “Snip” and Mary Colette Brune. As one of eight children, she was raised in St. Paul, Iowa, on a farm filled with laughter, work, and love. Growing up in Southeast Iowa shaped everything about her—her strong values, her love of family, and her appreciation for the simple, meaningful parts of life. She often shared stories of her childhood—chasing kittens in the barn, playing in the hayloft, and the unbreakable bonds she formed with her siblings, which remained a constant in her life.
Janet excelled in school and graduated as valedictorian of her high school class. She had a passion for learning—especially math and history—and a deep admiration for the nuns who taught her. After beginning her own family, she returned to school in her 30s to earn her degree in accounting, graduating at the top of her class and passing the CPA exam—an extraordinary feat at the time. She did it not for praise, but because she believed in doing things well and found joy in putting her knowledge to use.
In 1965, Janet met the love of her life, Tom Thrasher. They were a true match of opposites that fit together perfectly—yin and yang in the truest sense. Tom was outgoing, big-hearted, and full of jokes (often hilariously inappropriate), while Janet was composed, reflective, and full of quiet grace. He brought out her laugh like no one else could, and she brought out his softer side. She added grace and calm to his bold spirit; he added spark and spontaneity to her quiet wisdom. Together, they balanced each other in a way that was nothing short of beautiful. Their marriage of 58 years was full of laughter, loyalty, and deep love—a love that never wavered.
Together, they raised two children: Kevin Thrasher, and his wife Kim, who brought Janet the joy of two beloved grandchildren, Emma and Ben; and Kay, and her husband Jon, who gave her three more of her greatest blessings—Ava, Dane, and Hannah.
To her five grandchildren, Janet was more than a grandmother—she was Nama, the heart of the family and the keeper of unconditional love. She had a remarkable way of making each grandchild feel uniquely special, truly seen, and endlessly loved. Her care ran deep—always concerned for their well-being, always asking the thoughtful questions, always cheering them on in whatever they were passionate about. Whether it was a new interest, a small success, or simply navigating life, Nama was their biggest supporter and fiercest believer. Her presence, whether near or far, was felt in every word of encouragement, every handwritten note, every holiday lovingly prepared. She made them feel safe, celebrated, and treasured—always.
Janet faced life’s challenges with unmatched courage, especially her decades-long battle with cancer. She fought through four separate diagnoses without ever complaining. Instead, she expressed gratitude—for her life, her family, and the moments she was given. Every card, every letter sent during her illness was read and cherished. They became fuel for her spirit and a reminder of the love that surrounded her.
Janet will be remembered for her unwavering love, sharp mind, quiet strength, and the grace that defined her. She was elegant, humble in her brilliance, and a ruthless force at the card table—she didn’t just play, she played to dominate, all with a sweet smile. Her Catholic faith grounded her with humility and purpose. Janet adored her family and cherished her friendships, nurturing both with deep care and loyalty that lived in the way she listened, extended kindness, and made it known how much she valued and loved them.
She leaves behind her husband, Tom Thrasher; her children, Kevin (Kim) Thrasher and Kay (Jon); her beloved grandchildren, Emma, Ben, Ava, Dane, and Hannah; her siblings, extended family, and many treasured friendships and colleagues who brought her so much joy throughout the years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her honor to the Healing Garden at the Buffett Cancer Center.

Kevin and family I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. My deepest sympathies to you all.
I’m so sorry to see Janet’s passing. She was a class act lady. She added so much knowledge and history, not to mention fun to all of our Bible studies. I loved her very much. Many she rest in peace…
My thoughts and prayers to Janet’s husband and family. Janet came into my life in 2018 when she welcomed me to St Patrick’s family. I was at a low point in my life and she made sure we had occasional coffee dates to discuss life, God and feelings. I’ve met many good people in my life but she was one of the very special. Be assured she will be missed by many but welcomed by her Savior.
May all the many prayers for you and the family help ease your heart. Thinking of you with love
