Jeraldine “Jeri” (Augustine) Swanson

Jeraldine “Jeri” (Augustine) Swanson

November 23, 1933 – July 30, 2024

Preceded in death by beloved husband of 67 years, Emil “Ted” Swanson, Jr.; parents,  Ben and Verle Augustine; siblings Vernelle Dalton, Bernice Crofton and Jack Augustine. Survived by sons Thomas (Linda) Swanson and Matthew (Sharon) Swanson, 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jeri was a woman ahead of her time. She started at Northwestern Bell telephone company in 1952 and by the 1970’s became the first female district manager, finally retiring as a director with 37 years of service in 1989. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It did not stop her from being the “hostess with-the-most-est”, an avid pinochle and Skipbo player, enjoying arts & crafts and jigsaw puzzles, serving as council president and long-time choir member at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies of the Legion of Honor in the Tangier Shrine. Jeri was a master genealogist traveling to Scandinavia and Germany in search of the families back to the 16 century and continued updating the family tree right up to the end. The massive multi-day Swanson family reunion at Mahoney State Park in 1994 was a quintessential Jeri event! Along with her husband Ted, she followed Cornhusker football from coast to coast and beyond for over 40 years. Only blindness curtailed her activities toward the end. She was a supportive and generous wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend known for her take-charge attitude. Look out Lord, here comes “Iron Pants”!
