Jerome V. “Vince” McCormick

McCormick, Jerome V. “Vince” Aug 5, 1921 – Jul 23, 2014 Vince was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. With high school education complete, he enlisted in the Navy with the US engagement in WWII. He fought that good fight as a medical assistant in the South Pacific including, Guam, Gaudalcanal, and the Solomon Islands. When the war ended, he battled malaria back home in Flint before heading out to California to seek life and adventure with his sister, Ann. His love of airplanes lead him to a rich career in the Air Force as a jet mechanic and instructor. He retired in 1969 to settle down with Willa and his girls in Omaha, Nebraska and began a second career with the U.S. Postal Service. Vince’s interests were vast and varied over his many years. His passions included: golf, sailing, photography, music, dancing with his wife, upholstery, health food, electronics, carpentry, fitness and swimming, wood-working, cooking, planes, Corvettes, current events, and research. In his later years he moved on to the computer age: PC, laptops, iPads, emails, games and even Face Book! His last quest was thinking he might need an iPhone. Vince was a great man who did simple things in life extremely well and developed great habits practiced over many years, from getting up at 4am to swim before his shift at the post office, to attending or watching Mass every day in his retirement. A humble, unpretentious life was his norm. No one appreciated a good meal, a round of golf, or a quick sail across the lake with more relish and gratefulness than Vince. Above all he loved his family: wife, daughters, grandchildren, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, brothers, sister, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was fiercely proud of all of us. Throughout his life, children stole his heart and devotion. Gratitude, understanding, fun, and faith were attributes that created his long and happy life. At any occasion, he could be found raising his glass, big smile on his face, and saying “This is the life!” We are all certain he is saying that now. Vince was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome E. and Genevieve E. McCormick, and brother, Jim McCormick. He is survived by his wife, Willa M. McCormick; daughters: Teresa Binder (Scott), Jane Hoyt (Patrick), and Patricia Ahlgren (Tim); eight grandchildren: Kelli, Joseph and Bridget Binder, McCormick and Mary-Therese Hoyt, James, Lillian and Matthew Ahlgren; sister, Ann Howison; brother, Bill McCormick (Barb).
