Joan A. Miller

Joan A. Miller

November 15, 1945 – June 10, 2023

Joan Alice Miller (Moore) was born to Vivian (Heffernan) and Glenn Moore on November 15, 1945, in Omaha Nebraska. She had three siblings Tom, Rita, and Steve. She graduated from St. Bridget’s grade school and Ryan high school. Joan went on to college at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for a degree in education.  Around that time, she met a young Air Force Airman from Northern Indiana. They soon married in Omaha, Nebraska in February of 1966.  They purchased their first home near Morton Park on 41St and W Streets. There they started their family by bringing Nancy Ann into the world in 1967. While starting their family she continued to work on her undergraduate degree.  A few years later they moved to the Blueridge Addition near 36th and Cornhusker Road, where Andrew Aaron was born in 1972 and Megan Elizabeth in 1973.

Joan continued her education going on to receive her Bachelors, Masters, and Specialist degree in Education. While motherhood was her favorite job, she moved on to teach school at St. Stanislaus, and St. Bernadette.  Joan then moved on to be a principal at Sts. Peter & Paul School for the next 20 years. She retired for a brief time before returning to St. Stanislaus as principal to finish her career.  Once retired Joan spent her time enjoying her nine grandchildren by babysitting, transporting to and from school, and attending extracurricular activities.

In retirement, she continued leading and attending family traditions with her siblings. Events included hosting family reunions, holidays, and girls’ Kansas City shopping trips.  One of her special occasions was her annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  She loved reading books, keeping up on current events, and savoring her daily Scooters coffee “The Joan”.  Most of her time was spent on the front porch riding her bike, praying, and keeping watch of Sherwood Drive. When Joan was asked to describe herself, she would say IRISH-CATHOLIC-DEMOCRAT-WOMAN.

She was preceded in death by parents Glenn and Vivian Moore, sister Rita, and brother Tom. Survived by husband Michael, brother Steve, children Nancy Pechar (Jeff), Andrew Miller (Tammi) and Megan Gutgsell (Jay), grandchildren Madelyn Flowers (Brandon), Jordan and Grayson Pechar, Julia, Aidan and Sienna Miller, Gisele, Giovanni, and Giada Gutgsell.

Sending my sincere condolences to the Miller family. I spent many afternoons swimming with Nancy during the summer in the Miller’s pool. I always enjoyed joking and laughing with Joan and hold those memories fondly. Rest in peace, Joan.

She was a wonderful principal to our students at Sts Peter and Paul when our boys were growing up. A truly nice fair lady. She always asked us how the boys were doing many years after grade school. Prayers to her family.
