Joan M. Gratz

December 24, 1939 – May 5, 2025

Born to John and Grace (Matteson) Gratz in Estelline, South Dakota.

Graduated from Estelline, South Dakota High School, and then went on to receive a diploma in nursing from St. John School of Nursing in Huron, South Dakota, a GSN from South Dakota State College in Brookings, South Dakota, and an MNA from University of Iowa.

Joan was employed as a staff nurse, nursing educator, and nursing service administrator. The majority of her nursing service was with the Department of Veterans Affairs. She has been recognized for her solid knowledge of nursing, dedication, values and fairness. Her love of family, nursing, and veterans carried over to life activities and commitments.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Grace Gratz; brother-in-law, Leon Schnieder.

She is survived by her twin sister, June Schnieder; nephews, Brian (Heidi) Schnieder and Kevin (April) Schnieder; great-nephews and greatnieces: Jackson, Madelyn, Emilia, and Gabriel; cousins, many of her nursing friends; and good friends, Rita Murray and Mary Kirkpatrick.

Visitation: Saturday, May 10th, 10am at Mary Our Queen Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial at 12pm.

Interment: Hillcrest Cemetery in Estelline, South Dakota.

Memorials are suggested to Mary Our Queen Catholic Church, Siena Francis House, or a charity of one’s choice.

    We are so sorry for your loss. Mavis Fraser and I are praying for your family and for healing over this loss. I know Mavis has many fond memories.

    I was honored to work with and for Miss Gratz at the Va Hospital. May she rest in ever loving peace , in remembering that a Nurse is always a Nurse no matter where. Francis Durham retired LPN.
