John Charles Liddick

John Charles Liddick

December 13, 1933 – March 8, 2025

John Charles Liddick age 91, passed into eternity on March 8, 2025.

He is survived by his son, Tim Liddick (Mary); daughters: Peggy Liddick (George Tatai), Penny Slosson (Jim) and Shelly Liddick; grandchildren: Dustin and Drew Liddick, Kyle Slosson (Jessica), Angela Kruse (Aaron), Laura Slosson, Taylor and Mia Hogan; great-grandchildren: Sophia and William Slosson, Malachi, Augustine, Evelyn, Obadiah and Oliver Kruse.

John was born December 13, 1933, in Red Oak, IA, to Harold and Billie Miller Liddick. “Brother John” as he was affectionately called was the eldest of five children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; parents; and brothers, Marlin and Duane Liddick. He is survived by his two sisters, Linda Liddick and Nancy Carlson.  John was a beloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

Shortly after enlisting in the United States Army where he proudly served his country, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Shirley Mae Harper.   Shirley’s health declined in latter years and John served as her faithful and devoted caretaker throughout the remainder of her life. They were married for 62 years up until Shirley’s passing in 2015.

Following John’s military service, he secured his previous position with the Ralston Purina Company in Omaha, NE. Throughout his 32-year career with Purina he quickly climbed the ranks to the position of Regional Operations Manager serving in the Omaha, NE, Ottumwa, IA and Lakeland, FL branches.  During his time with Purina he and his wife Shirley enjoyed many adventures together including traveling to the numerous Purina conferences and functions. Most memorable moments included John and Shirley’s winning the Purina costume contests year after year in their matching checkerboard outfits designed by Shirley.  The two of them also enjoyed golfing and dining at the Ottumwa Country Club as well as their Friday Bingo nights together.

Ever the entrepreneur, upon retirement from Purina, John set out establishing, owning and operating a furniture transport business “JL Trucking” which he later transitioned into “John L Transport Services” catering to tourists in the Florida area.

John was an avid golfer and loved it, so much so, that for several years he owned and operated a miniature golf course “P & J’s Mini Golf.”  Wanting to perfect his game he installed a miniature golf green in his home complete with astro turf and marker flags. Growing up shooting pool John had become quite the pool shark as well. A pool table was added to his rec room, and he spent many enjoyable hours shooting pool. John was a gifted designer and carpenter. A few of his unique creations included a four-wheel pedal cycle, scratching posts for felines, elaborate work benches and wardrobe racks.

In his later years, John made a simple confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ according to Romans 10:9-10: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” The fruits of his decision were evident in his life. Always giving thanks and looking on the bright side of life, John was hard working, faithful and humble. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son who was always kind to strangers and would lend a helping hand to anyone he saw in need.

We who loved and admired him salute him as we bid him farewell for now.
