John “Jack” Riha was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on December 22, 1930, to Frank John Riha and Hilda Carlson Riha. He was proud to grow up in a community served by his family and surrounded by life-long friends. As a young man, Jack enlisted in the Army in 1951, during the Korean War, and was stationed throughout Europe, where he began his love of travel.

Once married, with children in tow, Jack enjoyed taking his family on summer camping trips to the National Parks. He was very interested in photography and would always have his trusty Leica camera with him whenever they traveled.

Jack was also an avid hunter, starting at age 14. Hunting pheasants and quail were his primary quarry, but his perspective was always to enjoy the moment and the day. In addition, Jack loved to fish for Walleye in Canada, often planning trips that would include friends and relatives.

His work at the Omaha World Herald as a Photo Engraver for 37 years brought him great pride, especially when working on the Husker football team photos for the Sunday edition.

After retirement in 1992, Jack and his wife, Eloyce, traveled extensively throughout all 48 states, Europe, the Caribbean, and Mexico. He took special delight in the regional foods as they explored each area they visited.

He was a true gentleman: cultured, generous and above all else, honest. He will be missed beyond measure.

I want to express my sympathy to your family. Jack and my husband, Sam, were great pheasant hunting buddies. After Sam’s death Jack sent me a packet of photos documenting their hunting adventures. It was a very kind gesture.
