John Joseph Micek, Jr.
July 13, 1928 – July 7, 2025
Dad was a simple man, spiritual and humble. He sought to walk daily alongside Jesus, up bright and early to attend daily mass. It was here that his soul was most fed… receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. His goal was simple… a familial relationship with God so when he encountered St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he was invited in by name … John. To dad, God’s message was clear. .. bring Jesus to everyone you encounter with a loving smile and a warm embrace. His generosity then knew no bounds. Some would say their life was changed upon their encounter with our dad.
Together with his queen, our mom Ann Louise (married for 69 years), dad was blessed with 6 children – John, Greg, Michelle, Reece, Laura and Elissa – and their spouses, including 22 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was a tremendous role model, mentor, teacher and friend. With most of us living out of the area, he never missed an airport run… pick up AND drop off!! Growing up we fondly remember Sunday mornings after Mass, enjoying his famous potatoes and dancing to Polka music! He was passionate about Comhusker Football, celebrating every win… suffering with every loss. And we so hated when they lost! He enjoyed playing golf … and was a mean card player… Gin was his game of choice and was always up for a match. He was a quiet yet ruthless player! We could never figure out how he won so often. @
Dad was a father who led by example. During our young adult years, Dad gave up alcohol for about 20 years to model self-discipline. Dad was also invested in our souls. With six kids and a wife, and 7 days in the week, he figured he could offer one day in prayer for each of us. “Our day” became very special to each of us!
Later in life if you asked him how he’s doing, he smiled and answered, “I’m hanging in there pretty good.” The true optimist.
His personal mantra… Never Give Up! Perhaps his secret to living 97 years!
We will be forever grateful for the incredible care given to dad by several of his caregivers, especially Nissy, Nyakwew and Scott. You loved dad like we loved dad!
It’s such a blessing to have a doctor in the family. Special thanks to his son-in-law Shun, who gracefully walked with us these last several years.
Dad was born the youngest of 8 and raised in Omaha. After graduating from Creighton University he served in the Army, stationed in Colorado for a brief time before moving to California to join the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, one of the largest and most prestigious language schools in the world. After his service, he and his bride moved back to Omaha to begin their life as a family.
Dad began his career in the insurance industry working for Central National Insurance Company of Omaha. He later would form his own agency, as well as a Life insurance company and Casualty insurance company. He further broadened his reach with companies specializing in a niche credit insurance program and a vehicle extended service contract program. Dad never really retired …
Our mom and dad established themselves as significant benefactors in their community, with particular focus on the many aspects of Catholic education. Dad was a founding member in several organizations, including the Perpetual Adoration Program and the Sports Club, both at Christ the King and the Archbishop’s Committee on Education and Development. He was a major Benefactor for the MAGIS Catholic Teaching program at Creighton University, The Holy Family Shrine in Gretna, the Institute for Priestly Formation and Spirit Catholic Radio.
More importantly to remember about our dad, he was always quick with support to a friend, a school, a priest or parish – his generosity with his time and treasure was endless. Many recipients of his generosity would say his support was lifechanging!
One story told to us about dad mentioned that when Archbishop Lucas arrived in Omaha, and got updates on all the parishes, the one name that came up over and over was John Micek, as a major donor to each.
Our dad’s life story is one of extraordinary commitments to his family, to his faith, and to his community. He was a daily Communicant at Christ the King, literally to the end of his life. He leaves a humble legacy of generosity that will continue to impact countless lives and influence future generations, embodying his belief in the importance of Catholic values and education.
We have no doubt Dad entered the gates of Heaven, with our Lord saying “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” And reunited with his Queen, our mom.
Idz’ z Bogiem Dad! Thank you for leading by example. We will miss you!
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to one of four organizations.
Dad and mom were instrumental in founding The Magis Catholic Teacher Corps at Creighton University, which strives to form talented, faith-filled teachers for Catholic schools.
Dad and mom were founding members of The Holy Family Shrine in Gretna, NE, a refuge for pilgrims and travelers.
Dad always carried $100 in case he ran into a priest. He was a major benefactor of the Institute for Priestly Formation dedicated to assisting seminarians, priests, and bishops to grow in holiness so they may draw others to Jesus Christ.
Dad’s brother was a priest, our Father Uncle. This inspired dad to be a major benefactor of the Omaha Archdiocese Priests Retirement Fund.

John and his dear wife Anna Lou were a huge influence in my life. Generous beyond all boundaries, thoughtful, prayerful. Their presence in the Omaha Archdiocese has been enormous. They never wanted attention for their good deeds but performed them quietly. Surely God is welcoming John joyfully. God bless them and their beautiful family.

My deepest sympathy to Laura and the entire Micek family. Both John and Ann Louise are and will be deeply missed.
Many prayers for John and the Micek family during this time of mourning. Creighton’s Education Department continues to be grateful to him. The legacy of his generosity endures in the 200+ graduates of the Magis Catholic Teacher Corps program at Creighton and the thousands of students those teachers have taught in Catholic education over the past 23 years (and the twenty-eight current teachers headed into the classroom this fall). The reach of his generosity and faith through these Magis teachers and graduates extends beyond Omaha to various cities in Nebraska and northwest Iowa, the Kansas City area, South Dakota, Milwaukee, WI; Phoenix, AZ; Minneapolis, MN; and Tucson, AZ. May he rest in peace and joy.
Your dad John and your Mom Ann were the cutest couple. It was our pleasure to have known them & be in the same parish together!
Our prayers are with you Laura and the whole Micek family! Sorry I won’t be able to make it but I have foot surgery the day before.
May the perpetual light shine upon him!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the history on John. I’ve been a member at Christ the King Church for 62 years and can remember theMicek family back to the 1970s. Mr misek was a fantastic humble servant. A real role model for the world.. I saw him occasionally at the hospital and was always amazed at his positive attitude to carry onward. Our community was very blessed that John was present and active in our community and Parish. Out sympathy and thanks to the Micek family.
It was an honor to watch the live stream of John’s service today. I had the privilege of meeting him a few times over the last two decades. I was always impressed at his wit, deep faith and love of family. I have taken his personal mantra… Never Give Up! to heart. Rest in power Mr. Micek. Your legacy will live on in dozens and dozens of your family.
