John graduated from John Paul VI High School and later earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Bellevue University.  John began working at Douglas County Department of Corrections at age 19, and during his 36 years there, he worked his way up to Deputy Director.  John retired from Douglas County in 2017 and went to work as Director of Sarpy County Corrections until his passing.  John was well respected and has influenced many lives throughout his career in corrections.  He also taught Criminal Justice for several years at Metro Tech Community College.

In his spare time, John was always helping someone.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and family vacations.   John was a loving and caring person, devoted husband, father and friend, always thinking of others first.   John has impacted many people and there are not enough words that can describe how great a man he truly was.

  • Walter Nurton Posted February 13, 2021 11:26 am

I worked with John for over 25 years at DCCC. We often joked about all of the things he got away with at the jail before moving up in rank. The good old days, before all of the security cameras. When he would comment about an officer doing this or that crazy thing, I’d remind him about things he had done. Like the time he put black spray paint on one of the soft foam office chairs. Before it had a chance to dry or be moved, a couple of people had ruined light blue uniforms. Good times, though. Some great memories. Sgt. Wally Nurton (ret.)
