John P. Brungardt
October 20, 1959 – May 4, 2024
John Brungardt, age 64, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Born on October 20, 1959, John was the third of five children born to Richard and Ruth Brungardt. From the moment he was born, John was a beacon of kindness and positivity leaving a lasting impression on anyone he came in contact with. This was evident in his love for animals, from a young age, John had a natural connection to ‘man’s best friend’ and throughout his life, he was happiest when he had a canine companion.
John was a gifted athlete, excelling in baseball, swimming, diving, track & field among other physical activities. In his younger days, he showed an unwavering level of confidence that gave him the courage to try anything athletically. As John got older his commitment to physical fitness remained constant, as he found other ways to remain active, like running and weight lifting.
After graduating from Creighton Prep, John joined the US Coast Guard and served until he was honorably discharged. It was around this time that John was first introduced to the challenge he would face the rest of his life, Schizophrenia. This disorder is especially challenging to those who are afflicted and those who love someone afflicted with this condition. For John it challenged his optimistic spirit, and even forced him to question his reality. Those who knew John can attest that he faced this disease with the same courage, and kind-hearted spirit he’s exhibited throughout his life. Throughout his battle with mental illness, John maintained his love of sports, the Huskers, Chiefs, and Royals. However, his happiest times were when he was able to spend time with the ones he loved, his siblings and extended family. John was always quick to tell you he loved you, how much he appreciated you and his high pitched laugh and loving grin will be something we will never forget.
Throughout his life John has been an inspiration to anyone dealing with challenges that seem insurmountable, because in the end he maintained that his belief in God, and the love he shared with his family could overcome all challenges.
John is survived by siblings, Larry (Lisa), Diane Lad, Mary O’Neil; nieces and nephews, Joe (Anna), Nicole (Sean), Justin (Alex), Adam and Nick; many great nieces and great nephews.

John was such a gentle soul. He was the first resident I met when I started work at Royal Oaks. He came to my office often to talk through things so I got to know him well and for that I am thankful. I hope he’s finally found the peace that he so wanted. He will be missed.
Rest in peace and my condolences to family god bless .
