John Patrick O’Gara, M.D.

July 20, 1935 – April 28, 2025

In Loving Memory

John Patrick “Pat”, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, at the age of 89, after a long battle with Parkinsons Disease.  His life was a testament to the values he held dear – faith, family, compassion, and an enduring curiosity about the world.

Born in Lincoln, NE, to Joseph and Kathryn O’Gara, Pat was adored by many but left to cherish his memory are his; wife, Marilyn; children: Jennifer Gillmore (Paul), Julie O’Gara, Jeff O’Hern (Kristin), Joanie Edmiston (Will), Mike O’Hern (Diane); grandchildren: Ali Garman, Zachary O’Hern (Samantha), Jessie MacPherson (Noah), Ava O’Gara and Gabe O’Gara; great-granddaughter, Madden Kay MacPherson.  Preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Robert O’Gara (Gayle).

Pat pursued his passion for medicine from an early age. He received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, specializing in anesthesiology, graduating with the Class of 1962.  For over 35 years, he served as an anesthesiologist at Methodist Hospital where he was known as a trusted caregiver and mentor along with his unwavering dedication to his patients and colleagues.  He approached his work not just as a career, but as a calling – believing that medicine was both a science and a ministry of care.

Outside of his profession, Pat was a man of deep Catholic faith whose beliefs shaped the way he treated others – with kindness, humility and grace.  His love for his family was unwavering, and his happiest moments were those spent surrounded by loved ones, whether gathered around the dinner table, traveling to see his children, or cheering on Nebraska Football.  He also was an avid reader and was a lifelong learner whose love of reading filled his home with books and his conversations with thoughtful meaning.

Pat will be remembered for his gentle wisdom, his quick smile, his love of chocolate, and the enduring legacy of love and service he leaves behind.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Pat O’Gara may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation or Methodist Hospital Foundation.

    Marilyn and Family,
My heart goes out to you during this time. I truly enjoyed all the conversations I would have with Pat. I have the book he gave me (I made him sign it) in my office. I open it for a reference every now and then and just smile. He greatly influenced how I view caring for those I serve. Deepest sympathies, Laura.

Sending thoughts and prayers to both the O’Gara and O’Hern families. John and Marilyn were both supportive Sandoz parents and positive to work with. I still remember Jennifer, Julie, Jeff, Joanie and Mike as bright, fun children to teach.
